
Women's Track and Field continues solid season with notable performances on Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming into the season, the Lehigh women's track and field team had high expectations. So far through the season, the Mountain Hawks have showed why that is, notching solid performance after solid performance, Saturday's case was no different for Lehigh, as the Brown and White had a plethora of quality performances from Boston and Staten Island.
Starting in Staten Island at the Villanova Invitational, Morgan McConnell and Camari Griffin battled to a nice day. In the 60m prelims, McConnell notched a time of 8.19, while Griffin had a 8.26. Then in the 200m, McConnell finished seventh with a time of 25.69 and Griffin had a time of 26.17.
In the throwing events, the powerful one-two punch of Brittany Curtin and Teasha McKoy continued dominating play. In the weight throw, Curtin finished second with a powerful 16.81m (55'2"), while McKoy followed suit in fourth with a throw of 16.21m.
A pair of Lehigh members finished third in their respective events at the Villanova Invitational. After a stellar showing last Saturday against Lafayette, Brett DeWeese finished tied for third in the long jump at 5.33m, while Jordan Otto also finished tied for third at 1.60m in the high jump. Also, Bree Smentkowski tallied a sixth-place finish in the long jump at 5.24m.
Other notable performances from Ocean Breeze comes from Miranda Royds. The junior registered an impressive time in the mile run at 5:08.84, good enough for fourth. Annalise Davis finished third in the 3000m run at 10:39.24. Then in the 1000m, Julia Dorley came in eighth with a time of 3:03.03. Finally, Cate Shippee recorded a sixth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 11.18.
Moving onto Boston, the Mountain Hawks sent a majority of their distance girls there to compete on the fast track that Boston is known for. Junior Susie Poore highlighted the day for Lehigh in the 5000m run. Poore finished first with a time of 27:32.03. Her stellar cross country season in the fall prepared her for these kinds of races. Freshman Madison Zaun (fourth) also notched a quality performance with a time of 18:05.56.
Brooke Schaeffer finished 10th in the 800m with a time of 2:11.30. In the mile run, Jade Sessions finished 15th with a time of 4:57.12, while senior leader Diana Hammerstone finished 19th with a time of 4:59.42.
Mary Casey (2:14.68) and Ashley Crawford (10:05.60) both notched 17th place results in the 800m and the 3000m respectively.
Up next, the Mountain Hawks will return to Ocean Breeze on Friday, Feb. 7. This time, the University at Albany will be hosting an event.
