Mountain Hawks welcome in Siena for Saturday showdown

1/31/2020 10:11:00 AM | Men's Tennis

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After beginning its season with a season with a win last Saturday against Saint Francis, the Lehigh men's tennis team (1-0) will look to add another win to the win column. This time, the Mountain Hawks will battle the Siena Saints on Saturday evening inside the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center.

With a win on Saturday, the Mountain Hawks would start off the season with back-to-back wins. The last time that happened came in the 2015-16 season. Four years ago, the Brown and White began the season with wins over Drexel and Saint Francis.

LAST TIME OUT
Lehigh opened its season with a bang, winning eight of the nine total matches. In singles, Zack Elliott, Harry Wang, Gary Fishkin and Matt Kleiman all won their matches in straight sets. In doubles, the Mountain Hawks notched two wins to secure the doubles point. Those wins came from Wang and Elliot, and then Fishkin and Jacob Edelchik.

QUOTABLE
"I thought it was a really good first win for our team against Saint Francis,' head coach Wouter Hendrix said. "They came out strong in doubles, but we were able to step up under pressure and get the doubles point. Once we got the doubles point, we were able to shift into a higher gear and close out the singles. I think we need to come out looser and with more energy early on against Siena.

SCOUTING SIENA
Siena was picked fifth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Pool. The Saints will begin their spring season at Saint Joseph's on Friday night before traveling to Lehigh. The Saints also return their entire team from a season ago, a noteworthy take. Siena is already 1-0 in MAAC play after a win over Rider in the fall.

PREVIOUS MEETING
The Mountain Hawks defeated the Saints last year, 6-1. In doubles, the pairs of Wang and Elliott, and Edeleck and Fishkin picked up wins to secure the points. Wang and Jack Martin-Dyer notched straight set wins in singles.

UP NEXT
The Mountain Hawks will have another full week to prepare for the Drexel Dragons. Next Saturday, the Dragons come to Bethlehem for a 5:00 p.m. showdown against Lehigh.
