Mountain Hawks search for their 13th straight victory over Lafayette on Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – 'Tis the time of year! The time where the Lehigh women's track and field team will look to tame the Leopards of Lafayette in its yearly indoor track. The Mountain Hawks will look for their 13th consecutive victory over Lafayette College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. inside Rauch Fieldhouse.

Last time out, Lehigh competed in two events on a snowy Saturday. A small portion of the athletes competed inside Rauch Fieldhouse at the Moravian Indoor Invitational, while the majority of the team went and competed in Staten Island at the UPenn Select. Bree Smentkowksi shined inside Rauch, winning the long jump and 5.36m, while also finishing sixth in the 200m. Maddy Harding also had an impressed third-place finish in the high jump at 1.54m.

At Ocean Breeze in Staten Island, Brittany Curtin (shot put), Brooke Schaeffer (800m) and Madisyn Hawkins (pole vault) all took second-place finishes. In the high jump, four Lehigh athletes finished tied for third at 1.60m. Those members where Noa Levy, Jordan Otto, Calista Marzolino and Alexis Wintle.

"I think we had 22 PRs last Saturday," stated head coach Matt Utesch. "When you're having PRs and you're not expecting it, it's really exciting. I think right now, things are really starting to click well for us.

There will be no need for a motivational speech from any coach or athlete on Saturday. Everyone knows what is at stake. The Lehigh-Lafayette rivalry is one of the longest and best rivalries in all of college sports. Coach Utesch knows his team will come out ready to compete.

'In high school, there are duel meets, but nothing to the magnitude of this one," expressed Utesch. "Some freshman are stunned when they see the Lehigh-Lafayette rivalry. The excitement, the competition and the emotion involved is unreal."

With three weeks of competition complete, the Brown and White have had impressive performances from some of their top athletes like Schaeffer, Curtin, Otto, Morgan McConnell and Madisyn Hawkins. However, there are a few "sleeper" athletes who Utesch feels is primed to break out in a big way.

"In the sprints, Camari Griffin is ready to make a big impact. She's had some PRs, but I think she can do a little more. AS she builds confidence, she can be really, really good. I think Elke Knecht has more left in the tank. Brett DeWeese has been nursing a few injuries and I think she's going to overcome it and be magnificent," Utesch said. "The distance girls are starting to get a routine and I expect Diana Hammerstone to start hammering out a few wins. Ashleigh Crawford and Jade Sessions as well. Finally, I think Monica McGavin can do special things. When she turns it on, it can be something special to watch."

Last year, the Mountain Hawks easily defeated the Leopards inside Rauch, 115-66. In all, Lehigh won 20 of the 22 events that took place.

Up next, Lehigh will compete in two events Next Saturday. Athletes will be split and either participate at the Villanova Invitational or the Bruce Lehane/Scarlet & White at Boston University.
