BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Following a victory over Manhattan in the season opener at the Ulrich Sports Complex last Friday night, Lehigh men's soccer heads on the road for a weekend road trip to Evanston, Ill. where the Mountain Hawks will face Big Ten foes Northwestern on Friday night and Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon.
Starting with Northwestern, this will be the first matchup all-time between the Mountain Hawks and Wildcats, however, it's not the first meeting between head coaches Dean Koski and Tim Lenahan. Both coaches started out playing club soccer together in a South Jersey men's soccer league in the late 1970's and then coached against one another from 1998 to 2000 when Lenahan coached archrival Lafayette to two Patriot League Tournament titles.
It has been 19 years since Koski coached against Lenahan in Division I college soccer, but a lifetime friendship has culminated to this moment.
The Mountain Hawks pulled off the win on Friday night over Manhattan after junior midfielder Trevor Koski scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute off his chest from a free kick assist off the foot of sophomore defender Nick Jennings. The goal was Koski's second of his career and for his performance, was named Patriot League Midfielder of the Week to kick off the new season.
Lehigh picked up its first shutout of the season and 10th since the beginning of the 2018 season against the Jaspers, led by senior Zarin Tuten on defense and senior goalkeeper Will Smith, who recorded the 16th shutout of his career by making three key saves and keeping the score at 1-0.
Lehigh's offense generated 20 shots and eight shots on goal, which led the Patriot League after the first weekend of matchups.
Following the win, Lehigh has now seen victory in four of the last five season openers.
Northwestern provides the Mountain Hawks' first Power 5 conference challenge of the season and the first since Lehigh took on St. John's a season ago in a 1-0 victory. This will be the first time since 2017 at Ohio State that Lehigh faced a team out of the Big Ten.
The Wildcats enter the weekend 1-1 following a 1-0 defeat against UCLA in Bloomington, Ind. and then a 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh. Bardia Kimiavi scored Northwestern's lone goal against the Panthers while tallying four shots including three on goal. Mattias Tomasino has been the most active offensive threat for the Wildcats with seven shots including one on goal. Between the pipes, junior goalkeeper Miha Miskovic has been very successful so far, with a 0.49 goals against average and 10 saves while facing 29 shots. He registered a shutout for Northwestern in the victory.
As stated before, this is the first matchup all-time between Lehigh and Northwestern but the fifth matchup between Koski and Lenahan. Lenahan leads the all-time series between the two, 3-0-1.
Lehigh takes on Wisconsin on Sunday from Evanston for the first matchup between the two teams. Like Northwestern, the Badgers are also 1-1 entering play this weekend. Wisconsin got tripped up by UC Davis in their opener, 2-0 before notching a 2-1 victory over UAB on Sunday. Robin Oloffson and Noah Leibold each have scored a goal for the Badgers so far in 2019, while Zach Klancnik and Andrew Akindele have registered the assists. Oloffson and Michael Russell II each have three total shots to pace the team, while two of Wisconsin's three shots on goal thus far have found the back of the net. In goal, it's Dean Cowdroy in net for the Badgers. He has a 1.50 GAA with seven saves while facing 20 shots.
Just Lehigh's match with Northwestern will be streamed on Big Ten Network Plus (subscription required) starting at 8:30 p.m. ET. While the Mountain Hawks' match against Wisconsin will not be streamed, it will kick off at 1 p.m. ET.
