Kirst and Spence invited to try out for 2020 U.S. Men’s U19 Team

SPARKS, Md. – Lehigh men's lacrosse rising sophomore Cole Kirst and incoming freshman Jack Spence are among the 105 student-athletes around the country invited to try out for the 2020 U.S. Men's U19 Team, as announced late last week. The opening round of tryouts will take place June 21-23 at US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.
Kirst was the only college freshman from 2019 invited to try out. He joins 56 high school seniors and 48 juniors in the tryout pool. Kirst enjoyed strong success during his freshman season, posting 12 points (eighth on the Mountain Hawks) behind nine goals and three assists. Kirst scored two goals on two separate occasions – on Mar. 9 vs. No. 17 Army West Point and Apr. 6 at No. 2 Loyola. He also had a goal and assist against archrival Lafayette and scored what proved to be Lehigh's final goal in a big 10-8 regular-season win over Boston University.
Brother of recently-graduated Lucas Spence and rising junior James, Jack will join the Mountain Hawks this coming fall. A midfielder out of Springfield High School in Pennsylvania, Jack was the Central League MVP – which both Lucas and James had won as well.
Following the first round of tryouts, approximately 50 players will be invited to move to the second round of tryouts, which will also be held at US Lacrosse, from July 12-14. From there, a 30-man roster will be selected to participate in training weekends in November 2019 and January 2020, after which the final 23-man roster will be selected.
Lehigh ended 2019 with a 9-8 record, advancing to its second straight Patriot League Championship Game and fifth in the last eight years. Despite facing several significant injuries, including to key players, the Mountain Hawks battled and went on to beat three nationally-ranked opponents and give themselves a chance until the very end.
