BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team eyes its first Patriot League win on Saturday when it travels to Colgate to face the Raiders. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a tough 15-13 defeat against Army West Point last Saturday. Lehigh is 0-4 in league play, but those four losses have come versus teams who are a combined 13-3 on the season. With five games still remaining, the Mountain Hawks are still very much alive for a Patriot League Tournament berth, currently just two games out of fourth place.
Last time out, the Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead against the Black Knights. Army bounced back to pull within 7-6 late in the first half, eventually taking a 10-9 lead in the second. Lehigh responded with three in a row, but a 5-0 run, beginning at 17:25 of the second half and running through the 5:01 mark, proved to be the difference.
Junior Sondra Dickey continued her stellar play, tying a career high for goals (6) and points (8) while tying a school record with 10 draw controls. Senior Courtney Henig had four points (one goal, three assists) while junior Hannah Cermack added three as well (one goal, two assists). Dickey now leads Lehigh in goals (36) and points (44) for the season while Cermack has dished a team-high 18 assists. With her four points Saturday, Henig eclipsed the 150-career point plateau. Junior Alexandra Ladda had a big day defensively and in the midfield, posting five draw controls (to tie a career high) two groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Colgate is 4-7 on the season, 2-2 in league play with wins over Holy Cross (13-10) and Bucknell (12-11) and losses against Navy (18-6) and Boston University (17-12). A balanced offense sees three Raiders between 23 and 29 points. Tara Atkinson leads the way with 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists) while Noelle Patterson has a team-leading 24 goals (along with four assists) and Danielle Van Calcar has tallied 23 points (16 goals, seven assists). Ingrid Backe leads the way in caused turnovers (14), goalkeeper Samantha Croston owns a team-leading 30 groundballs and Van Calcar has posted a team-leading 36 draw controls. Between the pipes, Croston has recorded a 12.20 goals against average and 0.473 save percentage.
The Raiders lead the all-time series, 25-13. Colgate won six straight meetings between 2011 and 2016, but the Mountain Hawks have responded with wins in two of their last three. Lehigh beat Colgate 13-6 in the 2016 Patriot League Quarterfinals and last year, 12-6. Each of the last three meetings have come in Bethlehem. Lehigh has lost three straight at Colgate, with the last win coming in 2010 by a 15-12 final.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home next Saturday (Apr. 13) to host Holy Cross at 12 p.m. in a rematch of last season's Patriot League Quarterfinal thriller, a 16-15 overtime victory for Lehigh.
