BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Riding two straight victories, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team travels to Bucknell on Saturday to face the Bison. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. Most recently, the Mountain Hawks came back from down 13-10 to beat archrival Lafayette, 16-14. Lehigh, Bucknell and American are now in a three-way tie for sixth place in the league standings as the Mountain Hawks vie for their sixth straight Patriot League Tournament berth.
The winner of Saturday's game at Bucknell will remain alive for the postseason. The Bison would be eliminated with a loss, while the Mountain Hawks could remain alive with a defeat, if certain scenarios play out. If Lehigh wins its last two games (also vs. American next Friday), it will earn the sixth and final postseason spot.
The Mountain Hawks stayed not only alive, but also in control of their postseason destiny with a thrilling comeback at Lafayette, scoring six goals in the game's final 8:43. Lehigh used a 5-0 surge, all goals coming in the span of 5:24, to turn a 13-10 deficit into a 15-13 lead. It marked Lehigh's sixth straight win over Lafayette and 12th in the last 13 tries. Three different Mountain Hawks tallied six or more points, led by a career-high tying seven from senior Courtney Henig (three goals, four assists). Classmate Kellie Gough scored six goals to tie a career high, tying her previous high of six set last year vs. VCU – ironically also coming at Fisher Stadium. Junior Sondra Dickey had three goals and three assists, the three helpers all coming consecutively on Gough goals, all in the span of 2:57. Gough also added three second-half caused turnovers, which came in critical times. The Mountain Hawks won just eight of 32 draw controls on the day, but were tenacious down the stretch to gain possession and walk away victorious.
Bucknell has lost four straight games since a 16-15 overtime win over Lafayette on Mar. 27. Most recently, the Bison dropped a 21-1 final at Loyola Wednesday. Bucknell's other Patriot League win came vs. American by an 11-8 final. Eve Calabria leads the offense with 30 points via 13 goals and a team-leading 17 assists. Tegan Warren has 26 points via 16 goals and 10 assists while Morgan Steinhacker has scored a team-leading 24 goals. Kali Peeples leads Bucknell in draw controls (37) and Callie DeWitt has 34 caused turnovers to lead the Bison. Goalkeeper Jamisen DeWitt has corralled a team-leading 43 groundballs while owning a 14.94 GAA and 0.420 save percentage between the pipes.
Lehigh has won 10 straight vs. Bucknell, including a dominant 14-5 victory at home last season, to take a 32-12 lead in the all-time series. Two years ago, the Mountain Hawks defeated the Bison in the regular season (12-4) before topping Bucknell in the Patriot League Quarterfinals just days later (15-5). The Bison's last victory in the series came on Mar. 7, 2009, a 12-11 double overtime win at Lehigh. The sides first met in 1976, an 11-10 Lehigh victory. Bucknell won the following season, but Lehigh responded with 19 straight wins from 1978-96.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home for the regular-season finale when they host American on Friday, Apr. 26 at 3 p.m.
