LEWISBURG, Pa. – Behind a combined 14 points from senior Courtney Henig and Kellie Gough, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and would never trail, holding off Bucknell for a critical 13-10 win on Saturday afternoon. The Bison pulled within 7-6 and 8-7, but the Mountain Hawks extended their advantage down the stretch, on the way to their third straight Patriot League win. Lehigh is now 7-8 overall, 3-5 in league play. With a win in the regular season finale next Friday vs. American, the Mountain Hawks would clinch their sixth straight Patriot League Tournament berth.
Henig enjoyed a career day, posting career highs in goals (6) and points (9). One game after scoring six goals at Lafayette, Gough tallied four goals and an assist, scoring the game's first three goals before the game was 5:07 old.
"Courtney was tremendous for us today," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "She made the difference on our attacking end. We needed all those points today. Winning three Patriot League games in a row is a tough task and we are proud of our team."
Along with Henig and Gough, junior Sondra Dickey filled up the stat sheet with two goals, five groundballs, eight draw controls and three caused turnovers. Senior Kaitlyn Quinn scored a goal while sophomore Julianne Puckette dished two assists.
Defensively, senior Mary Ellen Carron and freshman Jenna Garden each caused two turnovers.
Gough opened the scoring with goals at 26:23, 26:07 and 24:53. Gough had four goals just 8:16 into the contest. Dating back to the end of Wednesday's Lafayette game, Gough scored seven goals in just 16:14 of game action.
After a Quinn goal at the 18:42 mark of the first half gave Lehigh a 7-2 lead, Bucknell went on a 4-0 run as the Bison pulled within 7-6 less than two minutes into the second half. Not long after, Henig single-handedly erased any doubt, scoring four consecutive goals to turn an 8-7 lead into a 12-7 advantage.
Bucknell came back with three of the game's final four goals, but it wasn't nearly enough.
Final shots were 32-29 in favor of Lehigh while groundballs were even at 16 apiece. The Mountain Hawks held a 13-12 edge in draw controls while sophomore Samantha Sagi made 12 saves across Bucknell's Jamie DeWitt, who tallied 11.
The Mountain Hawks will now return home on Friday to host American at 3 p.m. A win would clinch Lehigh the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
