UPDATE: Due to expected inclement weather in Friday's forecast, the opening draw has been moved up to 1 p.m.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of three straight games, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team needs a fourth consecutive victory to keep its season going. The Mountain Hawks host American on Friday at 1 p.m. and with a win, would advance to their sixth straight Patriot League Tournament. Friday's game can be seen live on the Patriot League Network.
Lehigh's postseason scenario is straight forward. Win, and wrap up the No. 6 seed in the league tournament. Lose and the Mountain Hawks' season would end. Should they advance, the Patriot League Quarterfinals are set for just 48 hours later, on Sunday. The No. 6 seed will play at the No. 3 seed, which will be either Boston University or Army West Point.
Lehigh has put itself in postseason position due to three straight wins, over Holy Cross (12-8), Lafayette (16-14) and Bucknell (13-10), all in an eight-day span. The seniors have especially stepped up of late. Courtney Henig was named Patriot League Attacker of the Week for the second time in her career following 16 points last week (seven points at Lafayette and a career-high nine at Bucknell). Kellie Gough wasn't too shabby either, tying a career-high six goals at Lafayette before adding four goals and one assist at Bucknell.
Gough opened the scoring at Bucknell with goals at 26:23, 26:07 and 24:53, and had four goals just 8:16 into the contest. Dating back to the end of the Lafayette game, Gough scored an incredible seven goals in just 16:14 of game action.
Junior Sondra Dickey also played a big role in the recent success. She assisted on three consecutive Gough goals late at Lafayette, then had a game-high eight draw controls at Bucknell, continuing to contribute all over the field. Dickey is the team leader in goals (48), points (60), caused turnovers (23) and draw controls (69). She is the only player who stands top five in the Patriot League in both points/game (4.00) and caused turnovers/game (1.53).
American has enjoyed a much-improved season, standing 7-9 on the year and 2-6 in league play. The Eagles picked up a strong win against Army West Point while also winning at home vs. Holy Cross last time out. American has three other Patriot League losses of four goals or fewer. Emma Vinall leads the team in points with 64 via 50 goals and 14 assists. Reigning Patriot League Midfielder of the Week Kendall Goldblum is second with 47 points (38 goals, nine assists) while Leah Brennan owns 45 (30 goals, 15 assists). Brennan leads the Eagles with 75 draw controls, goalkeeper Fiona Geier has a team-leading 37 groundballs and Cate Golden has tallied a team-high 17 caused turnovers. Geier owns a 12.37 GAA and 41.6 save percentage between the pipes.
The Mountain Hawks have won five in a row against the Eagles to pull within 11-9 in the all-time series. Last season, Lehigh scored the game's final five goals to come back and win, 13-9. Last season's result marked Lehigh's third win by a four-goal margin in as many years. In 2017, the Mountain Hawks won at American, 14-10. The teams last played at Lehigh in 2016, a 10-6 Lehigh win. The Eagles' last win vs. Lehigh was in 2013 by a 16-8 final.
If Lehigh wins on Friday, it would advance to the Patriot League Quarterfinals on Sunday, either at Boston University or Army West Point.
