BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-4 halftime lead, Columbia scored four of the first five second-half goals to pull even, but the Mountain Hawks answered for a hard-fought 13-10 win on Tuesday at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Seven Lehigh players posted multiple points, led by five (four goals, one assist) from junior Sondra Dickey and four (three goals, one assist) from senior Kellie Gough. Defensively, Lehigh caused 16 of Columbia's 19 turnovers on the afternoon.
"I just thought the whole team played well together," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "It was a great game to get experience where a team comes back on you a little bit, and then we really had to earn it at the end with some good strategy and execution. We kept saying keep your composure. Do the things you know how to do. Try not to put them on the eight-meter. We should learn a lot from this game."
Senior Mary Ellen Carron had two goals, classmate Courtney Henig recorded three assists and senior Olivia Kelly, sophomore Hannah Cermack and freshman Nora Giordano all tallied a goal and assist. Defensively, freshman Jenna Garden was stellar with three groundballs and four caused turnovers while junior Alexandra Ladda (3), Kelly (2) and Dickey (2) each recorded multiple caused turnovers.
"Our defense did a good job," said Redfern. "Jenna had a great game for us. I thought Ladda was strong on her matchups. We moved her around a little bit. I'm happy with her performance."
After Columbia went up 2-1, Lehigh received consecutive goals from Carron and Dickey to give it a 3-2 lead midway through the first half. The Lions pulled even at three, but that's when the Mountain Hawks staged a 4-0 run to create separation, which included two goals from Gough. Gough's second of the game gave Lehigh a 7-3 lead with 8:15 left in the first.
Columbia came back with the final goal of the half and the first two of the second half to pull within 7-6 just over four minutes into the stanza.
The Lions pulled even at eight just under 10 minutes later, but Lehigh immediately had an answer. Just 49 seconds later after Columbia's eighth goal, Dickey scored which sparked a 5-2 run, three of the goals from Dickey. Columbia twice pulled back within one, but the Mountain Hawks kept answering and Dickey capped off the day with Lehigh's final two goals for the 13-10 win.
Final shots were 34-25 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 22-15 edge in groundballs. Columbia finished with a 13-11 edge in draw controls. Sophomore Samantha Sagi finished with six saves between the pipes, including a big stop down the stretch to help Lehigh preserve its two-goal lead.
The Mountain Hawks will travel to San Diego for their final two games before Patriot League play. Lehigh faces San Diego State on Sunday, Mar. 10 at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. locally) before facing UC Davis on Tuesday, Mar. 12 at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. locally). Lehigh returns to home action on March 16th when it hosts Boston University for its first league contest of the season.
