San Diego State surges past Mountain Hawks, 13-6

3/10/2019 5:57:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

SAN DIEGO – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team opened a 6-5 lead early in the second half, but San Diego State answered in a big way, ending the game on an 8-0 run over the final 26:29 to beat the Mountain Hawks, 13-6 on Sunday afternoon. Senior Kellie Gough led the offense with two goals and an assist while sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Sagi made 13 saves, including eight in the first half. Lehigh will return to action on Tuesday for a neutral-site game against UC Davis, also held at San Diego State.

"San Diego State played a better second half today and they deserved to win," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We need to work on getting the ball moving to create better scoring opportunities."

Along with Gough's offensive effort, senior Courtney Henig scored two goals while junior Sondra Dickey posted a goal and assist. Freshman Maggie Kelly led the team with five draw controls while junior Alexandra Ladda was strong defensively with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

San Diego State opened an early 2-0 lead, but the Mountain Hawks answered with three of the next four goal, capped off by freshman Nora Giordano's fifth of the season to pull even at three midway through the first half. Each side scored two more in the half, as Gough's second goal, a free position goal with 48 seconds remaining, pulled the Mountain Hawks even at 5-5 after 30 minutes of play.

Dickey found Henig at the 27:05 mark of the second half to give Lehigh its first lead at 6-5, but the Aztecs scored two goals in 13 seconds – at 26:29 and 26:16 – to go back in front, on the way to eight consecutive scores and the 13-6 final. San Diego State goalkeeper Katy Sharretts made six second-half saves to help keep the Mountain Hawks at bay.

Final shots were 38-26 in favor of San Diego State while the Aztecs held a 21-17 edge in groundballs and 12-9 advantage in draw controls.

Lehigh is set to wrap up its California road swing on Tuesday when it plays UC Davis at 4 p.m. ET in a neutral-site contest.
