Lehigh earns first Patriot League win, downing Colgate 6-1 in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Lehigh women's tennis team picked up its first Patriot League win of the season, downing Colgate 6-1 Sunday at Drumlins Country Club. The Mountain Hawks won two doubles matches to claim the first point and then reeled off wins in five of the six singles flights to improve to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the league, while snapping a five-match losing streak in the process.
In doubles play, Lehigh's top team of junior Sibel Can and sophomore Paula Gonzalez opened things up with a 6-1 win over Mackenzie Deeter and Jordan Williams. The No. 3 team of senior Grace Lin and junior Leigh Friedman clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Callie Bartimer and Elizabeth Laub. Lehigh also led the match at No. 2 that was not finished.
Gonzalez extended Lehigh's lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Deeter at the top singles flight, while Can gave the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Williams at No. 2.
Sophomore Casey Zhong delivered the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Nicole Condas at No. 6 singles. Freshman Elizabeth Nowak and sophomore Catherine Meighan added singles wins for the Mountain Hawks.
Colgate falls to 4-13 overall and 2-4 in the league with the loss.
Lehigh will now have nearly two weeks off before hosting Army for a 2 p.m. match on Friday April 12.
