BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its first action in 12 days, the Lehigh women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to defending Patriot League champion Army West Point Friday in a match that began on the Ulrich Varsity Courts and later moved into the Lewis Tennis Center due to rain.
Army won the doubles point 2-1 while five of the six singles matches were tightly contested. Freshman Elizabeth Nowak earned the lone point for Lehigh with a win at No. 3 singles.
The loss drops the Mountain hawks to 5-10 overall and 1-4 in the league, while Army improves to 18-6 and 5-1 in league matches.
The Black Knights clinched the doubles point with wins at the bottom two flights, but Lehigh picked up a win at the top flight as junior Sibel Can and sophomore Paula Gonzalez beat Ana Joyner and Stephanie Dolehide 7-5.
With rain moving the action inside, Army took a 2-1 lead when Dolehide beat sophomore Casey Zhong 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4. Nowak put Lehigh on the board with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Paola Bau at No. 3 singles.
The top two singles flights needed three sets to be decided, but in both cases Lehigh players won the first set before dropping two straight. Gonzalez lost to Kirby Einck in a three-setter at No. 2 and Joyner clinched the match for Army, rallying from a set down to beat Can 7-3 in a third set tiebreak.
