Mountain Hawks drop back-and-forth contest vs. Army West Point, 15-13

3/30/2019 9:10:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army West Point scored five consecutive second-half goals to take a 15-12 lead and the Lehigh women's lacrosse team couldn't recover, falling 15-13 on Saturday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Junior Sondra Dickey scored her career-high tying sixth goal to pull the Mountain Hawks within two with 2:34 remaining, but they couldn't get any closer. Dickey also added 10 draw controls to tie a program record, originally set by Kayleen Kelly last April. With the defeat, Lehigh falls to 4-7, 0-4 in league play with five Patriot League contests still remaining and a chance to get back into the running for a Patriot League Tournament berth.

"Army's two top attackers did a really nice job, Caroline Raymond and Jackie Brattan," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "They each had five goals. We didn't do a good enough job on them. We didn't get the goalkeeping we're accustomed to tonight. I thought Army played hard, as did well. It was a really great game, but we just didn't make quite enough plays."

Dickey added two assists for a career-high tying eight points. Senior Courtney Henig recorded a groundball and three caused turnovers while sophomore Hannah Cermack tallied a goal and two assists. Freshman Nora Giordano scored Lehigh's first two goals of the evening.
Defensively, Dickey, freshman Emma McGillis and junior Alexandra Ladda each caused two turnovers. Ladda also had two groundballs and five draw controls.

Lehigh jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, with two goals apiece coming from Giordano and Dickey. The teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the half, with no team scoring more than two in a row. The Black Knights had a mini 4-1 run to pull within 7-6, but Dickey's third goal of the half, coming with three seconds remaining, gave Lehigh an 8-6 halftime advantage.
The Black Knights began the second half with four of the first five goals to take a 10-9 lead at the 23:52 mark. Lehigh answered with three in a row, from senior Mary Ellen Carron, Dickey and freshman Maggie Kelly, to open a 12-10 lead with 18:02 remaining.
From there, Army reeled off five consecutive scores to take a 15-12 advantage. Dickey got the Mountain Hawks back within two with more than two minutes still on the clock, but that's as close as they would come.

Lehigh held a 29-28 edge in shots while Army West Point finished with a 13-10 advantage in groundballs. Lehigh had 16 draw controls to Army's 10. Sophomore Samantha Sagi made six saves for the Mountain Hawks across Maddie Burns, who made 11 for the Black Knights.

The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday (Apr. 6) at Colgate. Gametime is set for 12 p.m.
