Lehigh settles for Sunday doubleheader split with Lafayette

3/24/2019 9:26:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh baseball team struggled offensively in the first game, but the offense carried the team in Game 2, as the Mountain Hawks split a doubleheader with Lafayette on Sunday afternoon at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park. Lehigh finishes the weekend dropping two out of three games to the Leopards and starting Patriot League play with a 1-3 record.

Lafayette got out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first three innings of the game, after three singles, two fielder's choices, a throwing error that turned into a run and a three-run home run from Trey Durrah in the top of the third inning.

Sophomore right fielder Quinn McKenna hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning to put the Mountain Hawks on the scoreboard, now trailing 10-1.
A Trey Durrah RBI double extended the Leopards lead to 11-1 in the top of the fourth inning.

Senior catcher Jeff Shanfeldt singled to center field, scoring Ryan Malloy to cut the deficit to 11-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Leopards tacked on three more runs between the fifth and seventh innings to come away with a 14-2 victory.

Six different Mountain Hawks tallied a single hit, as starter Peter Woltersdorf (2-1) was charged with the first loss of his collegiate career.

The second game of the doubleheader had a little bit of a different feel for the Mountain Hawks, who were playing with their backs against the wall for the final game of the series after losing three straight games.

The Leopards got the scoring started first once again after Richard Villa reached on an error by Matt Hand at shortstop, scoring Justin Johnson to take a 1-0 lead.

However, it was Shanfeldt's two-RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to score Tony Gallo and Gerard Sweeney that gave Lehigh the lead that stayed put for the remainder of the contest.
The Mountain Hawks put together a strong bottom of the second inning that culminated with a six-spot to pull ahead by seven runs.

Sophomore second baseman Eric Cichocki reached on a fielder's choice that scored Matt Hand, giving the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 lead. Tony Gallo singled home Quinn McKenna to go up 4-1.

With Gallo, Sweeney and Mike Maguire on base, Malloy blasted a ball to left field, a grand slam for his sixth home run of the season. The blast gave the Mountain Hawks a commanding 8-1 lead.
"Ryan is just having a special start to his season and I know teams are starting to pitch around him a little bit but when the bases are loaded, you can't do that," said head coach Sean Leary. "He just came through again. He's honestly just put his team on his back pretty much the entire first third of the season."

Lafayette added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to 8-5, which was answered back quickly by Lehigh in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a two-RBI double for Casey Rother that scored both Shanfeldt and Malloy. Mike Maguire also had himself a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning that scored Quinn McKenna and Eric Cichocki to extend the lead to 12-5.

An Ethan Stern double, a groundout that scored a run and a Trey Durrah home run put three more on the scoreboard for the Leopards in the top of the seventh inning, making it a 12-9 game.

Maguire continued his impressive offensive day, by homering in the bottom of the seventh inning for the second time on the year, as well as an RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Mountain Hawks up 14-9.
Lehigh put the final two runs of the game up in the bottom of the eighth inning, an RBI double for Sweeney and an RBI single for Ryan Malloy that scored Sweeney to close the game out, 16-9.

"I think a lot of this game had to with us relaxing a little bit, you get to a point when you're pressing so much in these first three games," said Leary. "We got outplayed and on our home field where we expected to win the series, but our offensive approach was terrific the entire fourth game."

Five Mountain Hawks had multi-hit games with four players going for three or more hits in the ballgame. Mike Maguire went 3-for-6 with a home run, triple, double, three runs scored and four RBIs. Gerard Sweeney went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and one RBI. Tony Gallo went 4-for-6 with four singles, two runs scored and an RBI. Ryan Malloy went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and five RBIs, while Jeff Shanfeldt was 2-for-4 with two walks, a run scored and two RBIs.

On the mound, junior right-hander Levi Stoudt pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out seven batters to pick up his second win of the 2019 campaign.

The Mountain Hawks will head back on the road on Tuesday to take on Delaware in Newark at 3 p.m. for the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic. They will then return home on Wednesday to host Saint Peter's for a 3 p.m. tilt at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park.
