BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's track and field team will travel to two meets this weekend as the team begins its outdoor season. The Mountain Hawks are competing in the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational Meet in Rock Hill, South Carolina, as well as in the Penn Challenge at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
During the 2018 outdoor season, the Mountain Hawks had three athletes named Patriot League Champions as the team took third place overall in the championship meet. All three first place finishers last season return to this year's roster.
Sophomore Brittany Curtin, who won the discus event as a freshman last season, and high jump Patriot League champion junior Jordan Otto will compete at this weekend's invitational. Curtin is competing in the shot put, discus and hammer throw while Otto is competing in the high jump.
Sophomore Maddy Harding, who was named second team All-Patriot League last season, is also competing at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational this weekend.
In the recently concluded indoor season, Otto won her second individual championship title in the high jump with a 1.70m (5' 7") performance at the Patriot League Championship meet last month. The 4x800m relay team also won a Patriot League Championship, finishing with a time of 8:48.80 which earned the team school, meet and facility records.
Harding will begin the weekend's competition tomorrow as she competes in the 100m hurdles heptathlon event at the Winthrop Invitational, beginning Thursday at 2 p.m. The multi events carry into Friday morning with the heptathlon long jump set for 10:15 a.m.
Both field and running events are set to begin on Friday, with preliminary races in the afternoon before the finals on Saturday. The hammer throw, shot put, high jump and pole vault are scheduled for Friday afternoon, with field action resuming Saturday morning with the triple jump, javelin and discus.
Saturday's Penn Challenge begins at noon, with Lehigh runners beginning events at 1:05 p.m. with the 1500m. Nicole Abbondandelo, Sophie Antonioli, Kara Bonner, Ashleigh Crawford, Maura Henderson, Hetty McMillan, Susie Poore, Miranda Royds, Jade Sessions, Erin Tressler and Jamie Zamrin are all competing in the 1500m.
Crawford is the third returning women's Patriot League outdoor champion from last year as she won the 3000m steeplechase.
Lehigh will have six runners competing in the 3000m, including senior Stephanie Hayes, who competed in the event last season at the ECAC Championships.
Antonioli, Mary Casey, Carly Friend and Sessions will lead the Mountain Hawk 4x400m relay groups. The 4x400m relay is the last event of the meet, set to begin at 5 p.m. Last season, the Lehigh 4x400m relay team finished in sixth place at the Patriot League Championship meet.
