Throwers earn top 10 finishes as Lehigh opens outdoor season with two meets

BETHLEHEM, Pa — The Lehigh women's track and field team got its outdoor season started at two meets this weekend in Rock Hill, South Carolina and Philadelphia.

The Winthrop/Adidas Invitational saw strong performances by the Mountain Hawks' throwers and sprinters. Sophomore Brittany Curtin finished sixth in the hammer throw with a 51.53m (169' 11") mark. Sophomore Maggie Tarmey finished just behind Curtin, placing seventh with a 51.53m (169' 1") finish.

Curtin also finished 11th overall in the shot put with a 12.21m (40' 0.75") performance.

Lehigh had two javelin performances finish in the top five with sophomore Brianna Wanbaugh finishing fifth overall with a 39.20m (128' 7") finish and freshman Sarah Bond finishing right behind her with a 38.09m (125' 0") mark.

In the high jump, junior Alexis Wintle and senior Tyler Bannister tied for 13th overall, each finishing the event with a mark of 1.55m (5' 1"). Sophomore Jordan Otto also finished with a 1.55m (5' 1") performance, finishing 16th overall after passing on her first attempt.

Sophomore Madisyn Hawkins placed tenth in the pole vault, finishing the meet with a 3.45m (11' 3.75") performance.

Lehigh's 4x100m relay team of freshman Madison Hackman, sophomore Brett DeWeese, sophomore Morgan McConnell and freshman Chae Kim finished 11th overall, finishing with a time of 49.27. The 4x400m group of Alexis Smith, Hackman, McConnell and Camari Griffin finished 16th overall with a time of 4:05.25.

In the hurdles, senior Noreen Byrne finished 10th overall in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.51. Junior Erin Racano finished four spots behind her at 14th overall with a time of 1:05.83.

At the Penn Challenge at the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, junior Hannah Bonaguidi finished second overall in the 3000m, finishing with a time of 10:05.11. Senior Stephanie Hayes and senior Stacie Nadel also both finished in the top 10, with Hayes coming in sixth with a time of 10:12.48 and Nadel finishing tenth with a time of 10:17.91.

The 4x400 team of junior Sophie Antonioli, junior Mary Casey, freshman Carly Friend and freshman Jade Sessions finished eighth overall with a time of 4:14.00.

Lehigh will compete in the Fred Hardy Invitational in Richmond, Va., and the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina next weekend.
