BETHLEHEM, Pa— The Lehigh women's track and field team wrapped up a full weekend of competition, having traveled to three meets Friday-Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, Friday for the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State University.
In the 1500m, senior Clare Severe finished 28th overall with a time of 4:28.32. Her time was good for a school record, breaking the previous record of 4:28.64 set by Julia Perry in 2012.
"A lot of those girls in the 1500m ran personal bests, so a great showing for that event," coach Matt Utesch said.
Lehigh's top finisher in the 3000m steeplechase was senior Stacie Nadel, who finished the event in 32nd place in a time of 10:54.30. Junior Ashleigh Crawford and sophomore Miranda Royds finished just behind Nadel, earning 35th and 40th places respectively.
"The steeplechase is one of those races where you've got to get the first one in," Utessh said. "It feels different than any other distance event and it's very technical. This was the girls' first steeplechase of the year and it was a highly competitive meet, and they went and ran against a really amazing field. They did a great job."
A contingent of Mountain Hawks also traveled to the Fred Harvey Invitational, hosted by the University of Richmond.
In the 3000m steeplechase, freshman Nicole Abbondandelo finished third overall, earning a mark of 11:15.27. Freshman Martina Sell finished the event in fifth place with a time of 12:04.98.
"Nicole was great, what an outing for a rookie to come out and do that," Utesch said. "She was technically really sound. She's got a lot of room for improvement, she gets better and better and will continue a legacy with steepling."
Sophomore Brittany Curtin earned a third place finish in the shot put, finishing with a mark of 11.44m. Freshman Jena Reinheimer finished fifth with a 10.71m throw. Curtin also earned first overall in the hammer throw with a mark of 50.96m. Sophomore Maggie Tarmey finished second behind Curtin in the hammer throw, finishing with a 50.73m throw.
"I think for Brittany it was a solid effort, but she's so good that we expect PRs every week which is very unfair," Utesch said. "We're always happy to have the victory and she's making a pretty good habit of it."
In the high jump, sophomore Jordan Otto finished fourth overall with a 1.60m jump. Senior Tyler Bannister finished fifth with a mark of 1.55m.
"The high jumpers had a really nice day," Utesch said. "I think we can do a little better, but they were both technically sound and the higher bars are going to come throughout the season."
Senior Noreen Byrne finished sixth overall in the 400m hurdles, earning a time of 1:03.83. Junior Erin Racano finished two spots behind Byrne, earning eighth place with a time of 1:05.76. Rounding out the top ten for Lehigh in the 400m hurdles was junior Monica McGavin, finishing the event in 10th place with a time of 1:06.88.
In the javelin, freshman Savannah Buzzeo earned a 35.13m mark, earning a personal record. Sophomore Brianna Wanbaugh finished third overall with a mark or 38.66m.
At the Lafayette 7-Way Invitational in Easton, the Mountain Hawks finished third overall, earning 88 points as team. Lehigh finished behind Binghamton (181) and Lafayette (150.50).
Senior Olivia Reinold finished first overall in the high jump, hitting a mark of 1.60m. Sophomore Noa Levy, freshman Bree Smetkowski and freshman Hannah Figueroa also finished in the top five in the high jump.
"I'm really excited for Olivia to get a win," Utesch said. "When you have the roster of high jumpers that we have, it's hard to go win a meet so I'm really happy that she went out and won that. Hopefully she can go back and win next week's dual."
In the pole vault, sophomore Madisyn Hawkins finished first overall with a mark of 3.40m. The Mountain Hawks had three additional competitors finish the event in the top five, with sophomore Grace Gardella, senior Grace Coffman and freshman Carly Roche finishing third, fourth and fifth respectively.
"It was pretty gusty wind out there, so a difficult day to jump," Utesch said. "I'm proud of all of those girls for how they jumped with less-than-perfect conditions.
Freshman Teasha McKoy had a strong performance at Lafayette, finishing second overall in the discus with a mark of 40.90m. McKoy also finished fifth overall in the shot put, throwing a 11.18m in the finals.
In the javelin, freshman Veronica Meyer finished first overall with a mark of 35.78m.
"That's excellent in her first outing in the javelin," Utesch said. "I'm really impressed with her first college win."
Lehigh had a strong day in the hurdles competition with freshman Lauren Powell finishing third overall in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:08.32. In the 100m hurdles, freshman Carly Carpino finished fifth (15.51), sophomore Madison Harding finished sixth (15.90) and Levy finished seventh (16.21).
Lehigh will travel to Lafayette on Saturday, April 6 for the annual outdoor dual meet at Metzgar Fields.
