Lehigh women claim fourth straight win over Lafayette in outdoor rivalry meet

EASTON, Pa. — The Lehigh women's track and field team defeated Lafayette in the annual outdoor dual meet in Easton 125-77. This is the fourth straight win and the seventh in the past nine meetings for the Mountain Hawks over the Leopards in the women's outdoor dual.

Sophomore Brittany Curtin opened the meet with a win for Lehigh in the hammer throw, earning a mark of 52.37m. Curtin also earned first place in the discus (46.37m) and the shot put (13.23m). Curtin was named the meet's field athlete of the meet for her three win performance.

"She's a superstar," coach Matt Utesch said. "It's nice to have someone like that on the team that we can count on to go out and win three events. I think she did the same thing last season and would be happy to make that (performance) a sweep all four years."

The Mountain Hawks took the top spots in the remaining field events, with sophomore Madisyn Hawkins winning the pole vault with a mark of 3.55m.

"Madisyn (Hawkins) is a professional, she gets it done," Utesch said. "There was a little bit of a headwind today and it wasn't the greatest conditions so always happy with the win for her.

Junior Catherine Shippe finished first in the triple jump, earning a 11.03m mark. Senior Tyler Bannister earned the top spot in the high jump with a 1.60m mark, narrowly beating junior Jordan Otto, who placed second.

"It's great for Shippe to win, it's her first dual meet win," Utesch said. "She and Tyler (Bannister) helped us to dominate all of the field events. I think we won all of the field events so that speaks well of the whole women's team and that they didn't take it for granted. They came out and won everything."

In the track events, Lehigh swept the top three spots in the 800m. Senior Clare Severe earned the race's top time with a 2:11.95 showing, with senior Stephanie Hayes finishing in second with a time of 2:17.62. Severe was named the meet's track athlete of the meet.

"Clare (Severe) ran that race completely alone," Utesch said. "She took off right from the gun and led it wire to wire. That's an incredible time to run by yourself, and there was no competition."

In the 100m dash, freshman Madison Hackman finished first with a time of 12.56. Sophomore Morgan McConnel finished just behind her with a time of 12.68, good for second place.

In the 4x100m relay, Lehigh's team finished .3 seconds before the Leopards, earning first place with its time of 47.74 to Lafayette's 48.04.

"Madison (Hackman) and Morgan (McConnell) allowed each other to win, they went one and two," Utesch said. "They were the backbone of the 4x100m, so between the two of them they won three events. They did a great job and had a pretty good time for our relay."

Senior Noreen Byrne earned top marks in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.22.

"I think that race has been coming for Noreen (Byrne), she's had that time in her for awhile," Utesch said. "I think she was fairly comfortable and ran a great race."

Junior Ashleigh Crawford finished first in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:59.10, followed by freshman Nicole Abbondandelo, who earned second place with a time of 11:07.92.

"I think the water pits for Ashleigh were vastly improved over last week and now we've got her running a little more between the barriers," Utesch said. "She's back in contention to be a first round national qualifier."

The Mountain Hawks are back in action next weekend with three meets: the Mondschein Multi at Kutztown, the Coach Pollard Invitational at Moravian and Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic.
