Mountain Hawks fly past Monmouth, 8-2 to close out Aviary Invite

SALISBURY, Md. — For the second time in three games, Lehigh baseball's offense explodes, this time scoring eight runs on 10 hits to defeat Monmouth, 8-2 to finish the final day of the Aviary Invite taking 2-of-3 for the weekend. The matchup on Sunday was a continuation from the suspended game on Friday where the Mountain Hawks led 1-0 after four innings.
It was senior outfielder Ryan Malloy's weekend, as he continued to rake for the Mountain Hawks, launching two home runs and driving in three RBIs to pace the team. He went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Tony Gallo added a solo shot to start the game on Friday, which began the offensive run heading into Sunday. He also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Malloy finished the three-game weekend hitting .538 (7-for-13) with two home runs, two doubles, nine RBIs, a slugging percentage of 1.154 and an on-base percentage of .538.
"Malloy followed through with an absolute bomb to give us the 8-0 lead," said head coach Sean Leary. "Ryan continues to come through in the clutch for us and he crushed another ball later in the game.
"He's really put us on his back for the early part of the season. He's been truly amazing."
The fifth inning proved to be large for Lehigh, where the team tallied six runs to break the game open. A combination of solid at-bats from the heart of the order became the difference maker in the win.
"Our offense did a terrific job in the fifth," said Leary. "A leadoff walk, a perfect SAC bunt and then some clutch RBI hits by Gerard Sweeney, Tony Gallo and Jeff Shanfeldt were some of our biggest moments from the day. I'm really proud of all of our guys for coming through like that."
Junior right-hander Jason Reynolds (2-1) was magnificent on the mound and really helped build the momentum for the rest of the game, where he pitched four strong innings on Friday before the game was suspended due to rain. He allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out seven batters. His dominant outing without allowing a Monmouth run allowed senior lefty Ethan Frohman to come in out of the bullpen and throw well, especially with a lead in the later innings. Frohamn pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
"Our pitching set the tone for this game," Leary said. "Reynolds was outstanding through some very difficult weather conditions for the first half of this game. He put us in a great position heading into today with a 1-0 lead.
"Frohman picked up right where Jason left off. He battled a lengthy delay and just stayed mentally tough and focused to get us off to a strong start and then cruised from there."
Sophomore Peter Woltersdorf ended up coming in for Lehigh, shutting the door and finishing out the game for Lehigh's fourth victory of the 2019 season. The Mountain Hawks leave Salisbury with a 4-5 record and a positive outlook heading into Tuesday's matchup at James Madison, where they will face the Dukes for two games.
"Our guys did what they needed to do to get the win today, I couldn't be more proud of this group," said Leary. "We're going to take what we learned, focus on the positives and get right back to work against James Madison in a couple days."
