Mountain Hawks' three-game win streak snapped by The Shore, 5-1

3/9/2019 7:29:00 PM | Baseball

SALISBURY, Md. — Lehigh baseball was treated to some better weather on Saturday afternoon after the team only got four innings of the second game of the afternoon in on Friday. The Mountain Hawks got in the third game of the series against Maryland Eastern Shore, but the result wasn't nearly as positive, as Lehigh fell 5-1, snapping its three-game winning streak.

Freshman southpaw Luke Rettig got the start for Lehigh and while he allowed three runs, two earned on two hits with two walks, he threw as well as you could have asked for, also striking out three batters.

In the bottom of the second inning, Carson Davis put Maryland Eastern Shore on the board first with an RBI single to center field, scoring Dillon Oxyer to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Joey Nicastro reached on a fielder's choice and Davis scored on a fielding error by reliever Peter Woltersdorf. That gave Maryland Eastern Shore a 2-0 lead. That was just the beginning for the Hawks in the fifth, as they tacked on three more runs via a two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly to left field, which put The Shore up 5-0 over Lehigh.

The offense finally came through for the Mountain Hawks in the top of the sixth inning when senior catcher Jeff Shanfeldt doubled to center field, scoring junior center fielder Mike Maguire.

Lehigh only managed to produce three hits against Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, a drastic change from Friday's game when the Mountain Hawks scored 13 runs on 14 hits. Shanfeldt was the main bright spot, thanks to his RBI-single in the sixth inning. He finished the afternoon going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Senior left fielder Ryan Malloy continued to get hits, going 1-for-4 himself. Malloy has a hit in six straight games, hitting .448 (13-for-29) through his first seven games. This is the first game for the senior since Feb. 15 at Duke where he did not register an RBI.

Junior shortstop Matt Hand happened to be the Mountain Hawks' only other hit of the game, where he went 1-for-3.

Despite Rettig (0-1) giving up the three runs to end his outing and picked up the loss, Lehigh's pitching held its own for most of the ballgame, as freshman Matt Stamford was excellent in relief, going three strong innings out of the bullpen without allowing a hit or a run. He also finished with a strikeout.

Maryland Eastern Shore had a much better day on the mound on Saturday than they did on Friday, where the team finished with nine walks. Starter Dwayne Marshall threw six innings of three-hit ball and struck out nine.

The Mountain Hawks fall two games below .500 with the loss, as The Shore picks up its third win of the 2019 campaign.

Sunday will mark the end of the Aviary Invite for Lehigh, as the Mountain Hawks take on Monmouth at noon to close the weekend. The teams' first matchup on Friday was suspended due to rain in the fifth inning and was not completed. It is not yet known whether the teams will play out the remainder of the game before the end of the series. A decision on that will be announced accordingly.
