HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Lehigh baseball team continues its southern trek when they visit James Madison for a pair of games against the Dukes in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a weekend that included two wins in three games against Maryland Eastern Shore and Monmouth. Lehigh enters play on Tuesday with a 4-5 overall record, attempting to move to .500 for the first time this season.
The offense has been one of the big bright spots for Lehigh as of late, with the team combining for a .257 batting average in its last three games. Senior Ryan Malloy continued his torrid pace by extending his hitting streak to seven straight games, hitting .538 (7-for-13) with two doubles, two home runs, four runs scored, nine RBIs and a slugging percentage of 1.154 throughout the weekend. Sophomore Tyler Schreiner also had a big weekend from the plate, hitting .400 (4-for-10) with a double, four runs scored and two RBIs. Senior Jeff Shanfeldt hit .364 (4-for-11) in the three games against The Shore and Monmouth with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs.
The power was definitely a big factor in getting runs on the scoreboard throughout the weekend, as the Mountain Hawks combined for four homers from Malloy, Tony Gallo and Thomas Schumacher, and a total of 22 runs.
Heading into the series with JMU this week, head coach Sean Leary is prepared to send sophomore right-hander Matt Svanson (0-1, 5.79 ERA) to the mound to make his third start of the season. He is scheduled to throw in Game 1 at 4 p.m. at Eagle Field at Veteran's Memorial Park on Tuesday. Lehigh Game 2 starter for Wednesday's game is still to be determined, as juniors Levi Stoudt and Jason Reynolds, as well as senior Ethan Frohman, sophomore Peter Woltersdorf and freshman Luke Rettig all pitched this past weekend.
James Madison is going to be a tough test for the Mountain Hawks this week, coming into the series with a 10-5 overall record and a 10-2 record on its own turf. The Dukes are coming off taking two-of-three from High Point this past weekend, dropping the final game on Sunday 8-6, but defeating the Panthers 11-0 and 2-0 in the games prior. JMU has prior experience against the Patriot League already this season, with a series victory over Lehigh's archrival Lafayette from Feb. 22-24. The Dukes got the best of the Leopards in two of the three games.
Offensively, James Madison is led by Nick Zona and Kyle Novak, who both have posted averages of .388 and .333, respectively. On the mound, the Dukes will have Justin Showalter (0-0, 6.75 ERA) throwing the first game of the series followed by Michael Bechtold (0-0, 23.62 ERA) getting the second game on Wednesday.
Though meeting before in other sports, this will be the first baseball meeting between Lehigh and JMU all-time.
