BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh baseball is finally looking to get some games in when they head on Spring Break to play nine games in 10 days in Maryland and Virginia.
The Mountain Hawks have not seen action on the diamond since Feb. 24 at Mount St. Mary's where they took two of three games from the Mountaineers. Since then, the three-game series at Towson and a mid-week game at Saint Joseph's has been canceled/postponed due to snow.
Lehigh will take a bus 273 miles south to Princess Anne, Md. to take on Maryland Eastern Shore and Monmouth in the Aviary Invite Friday through Sunday. Lehigh takes on The Shore at noon on Friday and noon Saturday with a matchup against Monmouth at 3 p.m. Friday and noon on Sunday.
The team enters the weekend with a 2-4 overall record with the offense finding it's rhythm as of late, scoring 25 runs in their last three games.
Senior Ryan Malloy will look to get at it after a weekend against The Mount that resulted in winning Patriot League Player of the Week honors. So far this year, Malloy has hit .400 with a .700 slugging percentage, with a team-high eight hits, five RBIs and 14 total bases. He also has a home run, a triple and a double in 20 at-bats this season so far.
Freshman DH Casey Rother has also found a groove in the batters' box with a .350 season average, seven hits, three runs scored and a .381 on-base percentage. The Mountain Hawks' other .300-plus hitter is junior infielder Tony Gallo (.304), who also has seven hits, along with a double and a home run, four RBIs and 11 total bases with a .478 slugging mark. He's walked three times with two hit-by-pitches to drive his on-base percentage to a .429 mark.
In the three games, the Mountain Hawks scored 25 runs on 31 hits for a .279 average with six doubles, two home runs and 19 RBIs. In the first three games of the season against Duke, Lehigh went 14-for-94 (.149) with two doubles and a triple with four runs scored and two RBIs. In one week's time, there was a massive improvement on the offensive side of the ball, which will look to break through even more in the first four games of the Spring Break trip this weekend.
Pitching has been an advantage for the Mountain Hawks, even before the season started. For this weekend's series, junior right-hander Levi Stoudt (0-2, 9.45 ERA) is set to take the mound in Game 1 against Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday, with projected Game 2 starter Jason Reynolds (1-1, 8.10 ERA) looking to continue off of his last outing, when he faces Monmouth Friday evening. Reynolds had nine strikeouts in seven strong innings his last start against Mount St. Mary's and has a total of 16 through two starts.
Freshman southpaw Luke Rettig (0-0, 2.25 ERA) is projected to get the Game 3 start on Saturday against The Shore after his last relief appearance went for two hitless innings with four strikeouts. The start will be the first of his collegiate career. Wrapping up the starting the rotation for the weekend would be sophomore righty Matt Svanson (0-1, 5.79 ERA), who has found his form as of late and continues to be a strong option, making his third start.
The Mountain Hawks are anchored by a couple strong and reliable arms out of the bullpen with senior lefty Ethan Frohman (0-0, 3.52 ERA) and sophomore right-hander Peter Woltersdorf (1-0, 3.18 ERA). Both pitchers have been workhorses out of the 'pen and will look to continue that trend.
Maryland Eastern Shore enters the weekend with a 2-10 record to start the 2019 season. Their last two games resulted in defeats to Fordham at home. They picked up a win against the Rams on Mar. 2 along with a 3-0 victory at Longwood to open the year. Lehigh is 24-5 all-time against The Shore, picking up the last two victories against the Hawks in a doubleheader on Apr. 26, 2017 at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park.
Monmouth (1-8), like Eastern Shore, hasn't had that much success to open the new year, but already have one signature win, an 8-5 victory over No. 9 East Carolina on Feb. 24. Besides that, the Hawks have series losses at home against Penn State, at ECU and at Florida Atlantic. Monmouth had a successful 2018 season with a 30-25 overall record and a MAAC Championship appearance against Canisius. All-time, the Mountain Hawks have the lone win against Monmouth, winning last year's matchup by a score of 10-3 in Bethlehem.
