Lehigh dominates The Shore, 13-1 to take first game of Aviary Invite

Stoudt strikes out 10; Malloy 4-for-5 with 6 RBIs to lead Mountain Hawks

SALISBURY, Md. — There was no lack of offense for Lehigh baseball on Friday, as the Mountain Hawks scored 13 runs on 14 hits to defeat host Maryland Eastern Shore, 13-1 in the first game of the Aviary Invite.

The Mountain Hawks' performance against The Shore seemed to be a continuation of the offensive success Lehigh had two weeks ago at Mount St. Mary's. The runs kept pouring in, along with the hits, and the pitching dominated the Hawks' hitting for all of the afternoon.

On the mound, junior Levi Stoudt finally got the start he was looking for through his first three starts to the season. He really settled in and finished with a line of six strong innings, no runs allowed on one hit with 10 strikeouts and only one walk. He was electric and couldn't be touched for almost the entirety of the game. Working with a 13-run insurance policy definitely helped his case, but Stoudt was terrific, showing glimpses of what he can bring to this team for the rest of the season.

"He flat-out had everything going today," said head coach Sean Leary. "He was throwing his fastball to his locations and he had a terrific slider today. Quite frankly, it was just pitch and catch with Jeff (Shanfeldt).

"He was outstanding, it was just about as efficient as you can be and he was good early and he pitched great with a lead which is not as easy as it seems."

After Maryland Eastern Shore retired the Mountain Hawks in the first inning, all bets were off in the top of the second inning.

Sophomore Tyler Schreiner got Lehigh's first runs of the game in the second with a double to left-center field, scoring both Matt Hand and Ryan Malloy to get out to a 2-0 lead. Senior Thomas Schumacher, the very next batter, delivered on a two-run home run down the left field line to put the Mountain Hawks up 4-0. The homer was Schumacher's first hit of the 2019 season so far.

In the top half of the fourth inning, Tony Gallo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Mountain Hawks a 5-0 lead. Two of the three baserunners that loaded the bases were put on by a walk. Senior Jeff Shanfeldt then walked in another run, while Ryan Malloy followed up with a two-out, three-RBI double that scored Shanfeldt, Gallo and Gerard Sweeney. That gave Lehigh a 9-0 lead early.

In the top of the sixth, it was Malloy that dealt the damage again, a two-RBI single down the left field line that scored Shanfeldt and Chase Carlson, giving the Mountain Hawks a 11-0 lead. Jake Kochmansky came in to pinch hit and came through with an RBI single to put Lehigh up, 12-0.

Malloy got the Mountain Hawks up to a 13-0 lead in the seventh inning when he helped get Carlson across after being thrown out at first base with the bases loaded. That turned out to be his sixth RBI of the game.

After Stoudt (1-2) finessed his way to his first victory of the season, Sam Wurth shut the door to earn his first save of the year, allowing just one run on three hits in three innings of relief.

Offensively, the Mountain Hawks were led by Malloy once again, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and six RBIs, improving his batting average to .480 (12-for-25) on the year with three doubles and 11 RBIs, an .800 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .480. He currently has an OPS of 1.280. Malloy has a hit in five straight games for Lehigh.

"Ryan has built a lot of confidence over the last few weeks, he's got a beautiful swing," said Leary. "He's got great bat speed, he has the tools that sometimes it's a matter of having it click and he's in a great groove right now.

"He's getting his pitch and when he does that, he's not missing it and that's such a critical part of being on a hot streak. He's literally carried our offense for the last four games. He's been outstanding."

Schreiner was also on fire from the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. He also walked once. Schreiner is hitting .400 (6-for-15) for the year so far with four RBIs. He has a .467 slugging percentage and a .471 on-base mark.

"Tyler had the big hit that got us going today," Leary said. "He did a great job, with hits to all fields today, which means he's hitting it where its pitched and not trying to do too much.

"He's really locked in right now, he took a walk and he's seeing the ball well and that's great for us because we could use some production in the bottom third of our lineup."

Shanfeldt finally felt a rhythm at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI for the day.

The most telling offensive statistic from the day had to be the walks, where Lehigh drew nine of them. Schumacher had a team-high two walks in addition to his second-inning blast.

The patience paid off as Lehigh got the win, 13-1 to advance to 3-4 on the season, winning its last three contests.

"Overall, I thought our guys did a great job today of waiting for their pitch," said Leary. "A lot of times, they were getting to hitters' counts and taking a borderline pitch and working the count. But I thought our approach was pretty good especially considering the layoff."

The second game between Lehigh and Monmouth at 3 p.m. was suspended due to rain in the fifth inning with Lehigh leading, 1-0 at the end of four innings and is scheduled to be completed at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

After the conclusion of the game, the Mountain Hawks will take on Maryland Eastern Shore in the third game of the weekend approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
