BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team secured its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over the Siena Saints at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
Lehigh moves to 1-3 on the season while Siena drops to 7-3.
"Today was a huge team win and It feels great to get our first win of the season under our belts," said head coach Sarah Hendrix after the match.
The Mountain Hawks wasted little time getting on the board, winning doubles 2-1 to go up 1-0 over the Saints.
Senior Grace Lin and junior Leigh Friedman got the ball rolling with a 6-1 win at the No. 3 doubles before the Saints took the No. 1 doubles match to tie things 1-1. Coming down to the No. 1 doubles flight, sophomore Casey Zhong and freshman Elizabeth Nowak took care of business at the No. 2 doubles flight, winning 6-2 to clinch the first of five points for the Mountain Hawks on the day.
Moving to singles play, Nowak would be involved in yet another win for Lehigh, as she clinched the No. 4 singles flight in two sets, winning 6-3 and 6-1.
Siena would take the No. 3 singles flight to make it a 2-1 match before junior Sibel Can won in two sets in the No.1 singles flight 7-6, 6-2 to inch Lehigh closer to the win.
Now up 3-1, sophomore Paula Gonzalez would be tested in a three-set match. Falling 6-3 in the first set, she would rally in the next two, winning the second set 6-4 and clinching the win for the Mountain Hawks with a 6-3 third set.
Zhong was yet another Mountain Hawk to win in two sets, as she won 6-3, 6-2 to give Lehigh its fifth point of the day.
The Mountain Hawks will next host the Red Flash of Saint Francis (Pa.) on February 23 at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center.
