Mountain Hawks travel to No. 10 Penn State for Saturday showdown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team looks to rebound from a season-opening loss to Liberty when it travels to Penn State for a tough test against the No. 10 Nittany Lions. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. As long as the game is played outside at Banzer Stadium (rather than its indoor facility at Holuba Hall), it can be seen online through BTN Plus. After falling into a considerable hole on Saturday, the Mountain Hawks ended the game on a high note, scoring the final three goals of the contest and five of the last seven. Last season, Lehigh and Penn State played a barn burner, with the Nittany Lions coming out victorious, 14-13.

Liberty opened a 9-0 halftime lead this past Saturday, which swelled to 13-0 in the second half. Two goals from sophomore Sondra Dickey in about a minute got Lehigh on the board before the game ended with three consecutive goals from junior Christine Balestra, senior Mary Ellen Carron and junior Autumn Ryan.

Sophomore Samantha Sagi had plenty of strong moments in goal, tallying 13 saves along with four groundballs and a caused turnover. The Mountain Hawks caused 13 of Liberty's 20 turnovers on the day.

Penn State is 1-0 on the young campaign, holding a 13-7 win over No. 11 Towson. Trailing 4-3 at the half, the Nittany Lions outscored the Tigers 10-3 in the second, as senior Madison Carter paced the offense with four goals and five points to reach 200 points in her career. Prior to the season, Carter was named an Inside Lacrosse first team preseason All-American, while senior midfielder Kayla Brisolari was named to the third team, and Penn State came in at No. 9 in the preseason poll. Last year, Penn State finished 10-10, falling to Penn in the NCAA Tournament (in overtime).

Lehigh has yet to defeat Penn State in program history after squaring off every year from 1985-2001, 2009-2013 and 2015-2017. Overall, Penn State leads the series, 26-0. Last season featured a 14-13 thriller at Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks scored three of the final four goals to pull within one, but fell just short. Two years ago, the Mountain Hawks went on a 4-0 second-half run to pull within 13-9 midway through the stanza, but PSU ended the game on a 5-0 run for the 18-9 win.

Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home on Saturday, Feb. 23 to host Saint Francis (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
