UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team ended the first half on a 3-1 run to pull within 6-3 at the half, but No. 10 Penn State proved too much in the second as the Nittany Lions topped the Mountain Hawks, 15-5 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Hannah Cermack paced the offense with a career-high two goals, along with an assist, while sophomore Samantha Sagi was stellar in goal with a career-high 20 saves.
"Our team was more competitive today," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Our execution needs improvement, but we saw some of our younger players get time and contribute, which was a positive."
Junior Sondra Dickey filled up the stat sheet with two goals, four draw controls, three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Senior Mary Ellen Carron scored Lehigh's other goal. Seniors Olivia Kelly and Kellie Gough each caused two turnovers.
After Penn State took an early 5-0 lead, Carron got Lehigh on the board at the 13:10 mark.
After the Nittany Lions responded, Cermack assisted Dickey then scored herself to pull Lehigh within 6-3 after 30 minutes of play.
Penn State began the second half on a 7-0 run to create separation, but the Mountain Hawks did respond with goals at 5:02 from Dickey and 3:57 from Cermack. The Nittany Lions went on to add two more to wrap up the 15-5 final.
Final shots were 42-19 in favor of Penn State while the Nittany Lions held a 23-15 edge in groundballs and 14-7 advantage in draw controls. Penn State goalkeeper Taylor Suplee made six saves across Sagi's 20.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Saturday, Feb. 23 to host Saint Francis (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
