BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team will search for its first win of 2019 when it hosts Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday. Gametime is 1 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. The Mountain Hawks have opened their season with a pair of 15-5 defeats, with last week's loss seeing plenty of competitive moments at No. 10 Penn State before the Nittany Lions pulled away.
Penn State jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. But the Mountain Hawks responded by outscoring Penn State 3-1 over the remainder of the half, holding the Nittany Lions scoreless for a stretch of 14:21 and holding them to just one goal over the final 20:34. In that stretch, goals from senior Mary Ellen Carron, junior Sondra Dickey and sophomore Hannah Cermack pulled the Mountain Hawks within 6-3 at the half.
Penn State erased much doubt in the second, though, scoring seven straight goals to open a 13-3 lead. One bright spot all game was sophomore goaltender Samantha Sagi, who posted a career-high 20 saves – 11 in the first half and nine in the second. She broke her previous career high of 16 set last year vs. the Nittany Lions. Sagi become the first Patriot League goalkeeper with 20 saves since American's Fiona Geier (20 saves on Apr. 21, 2018 at Holy Cross). Prior to Geier, it had been well over five years since a Patriot League goalie had reached 20 saves. Sagi was recognized as honorable mention on the Patriot League weekly honor roll and for the season, she owns a 0.524 save percentage.
Saint Francis (Pa.) comes in at 0-1 on the season, dropping an 18-13 final at Radford last weekend. The Red Flash were supposed to play Bucknell on Wednesday, but the game was cancelled due to a winter storm. Against Radford, Morgan Day led the offense with a game-high seven goals and seven points. Her seven goals tied a career high and tied for the second most goals in program history. Saint Francis finished fifth in last season's NEC standings and was predicted fifth in the preseason poll. Day and Emileigh Scott were two of the Red Flash top three leading scorers last season. Defensively, Peyton LeConte was named first team All-NEC in 2018.
Lehigh stands 1-0 all-time against the Red Flash, winning 23-3 at home on Mar. 2, 2008.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home next Saturday, Mar. 2 to host UMBC at 1 p.m.
