BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will close out its fall season this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host the two-day, 36-hole Lehigh Invitational beginning Friday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The Mountain Hawks will be one of 14 teams competing in the annual event, in which senior Owen Quinn is the returning medalist.
Saucon Valley Country Club, founded in 1920, has grown from 18 holes and a clubhouse to become one of the largest private clubs in North America. It encompasses 800 acres and consists of four courses, including the Weyhill Course, Old Course, Grace Course and Short Course. The Grace Course opened with nine holes in the fall of 1953 with the second nine opened for play in 1958. Named for Eugene Gifford Grace (Lehigh Class of 1899), longtime president and chairman of Bethlehem Steel, the Grace Course measures 7,051 yards from the championship tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours.
Quinn's victory in 2018 extended the streak of Lehigh having the medalist in its own tournament to two. He shot one under par 143 last October, highlighted by an opening round 68. The Mountain Hawks finished sixth in a 13-team field last year and last won this tournament in 2017.
On Tuesday, Lehigh fell to rival Lafayette in the annual President's Cup matches at Hamilton Farms Golf Club in New Jersey. Senior Ryan Kelly had a hand in 1.5 of Lehigh's points as the Mountain Hawks fell 9-3.
Quinn and Kelly are the senior members of a Lehigh entry that also features freshmen Alex Aurora, Sam Barton and David Hurly. Freshman Joseph Dotta will compete as an individual.
The Lehigh Invitational will be the fourth tournament of the fall for the Mountain Hawks, who most recently competed at the UConn Invitational at Greathorse, Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Hampden, Mass. Quinn led the way with a 23rd place finish.
Lehigh's top tournament finish so far this fall was an eighth place finish at the Doc Gimmler, hosted by St. John's in mid-September.
In addition to Lehigh, the 14-team field for the Lehigh Invitational includes Patriot League members Army West Point, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Navy, plus Binghamton, Fordham, Hofstra, Iona, Monmouth, Rider, Siena and St. John's. Iona is the defending team champion with the Gaels followed by Monmouth and Navy last October.
The Lehigh Invitational will tee off Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the first 18 holes from the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. Players will go off the first and 10th tees. Saturday's final 18 holes will feature all players beginning at the first tee, with tee times starting at 8 a.m. Lehigh will play with Patriot League foes Army and Navy for the tournament's opening round.
