BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team returns to New York for its second fall tournament as the Mountain Hawks will compete in the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Binghamton at the Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, N.Y.
The Mountain Hawks will compete in this event for the third consecutive season. Action begins Sunday and concludes on Monday.
Lehigh opened its fall season with a sixth place showing at Colgate's Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational, Sept. 8-9 in Hamilton, N.Y. Junior Ryan Kelly paced the Mountain Hawks, tying for seventh place at one over par 217. Classmate Owen Quinn tied for 11th as Lehigh's No. 2 finisher. The remainder of Lehigh's scoring team for its opening tournament featured seniors Lee Hammerschmidt and Max Redetzke and freshman Michael Tanaka, while senior Eamon Marone competed as an individual.
Quinn shot 135 (69-66) to win the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational as a freshman in 2016. He posted another top 10 at last year's event, tying for 10th as Lehigh tied for the team title in an 18-team field, only to lose the team trophy to St. Bonaventure on the fifth score from round two.
In addition to Lehigh and Binghamton, the 15-team field features Canisius, Columbia, Lafayette, LIU-Brooklyn, Longwood, Monmouth, Niagara, the University of Ottawa, Rider, Robert Morris, St. Bonaventure, St. Francis Brooklyn and Siena.
Action on both Sunday and Monday will begin at 9 a.m. Binghamton will offer live scoring on GolfStat.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next week for the Connecticut Cup before beginning preparation for the Presidents Cup against rival Lafayette on Oct. 16. Lehigh will then close out the fall portion of its schedule with the Lehigh Invitational Oct. 19-20.
