Lehigh moves up to sixth place finish at Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational

APALACHIN, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's golf team shot a final round 291 Monday to move up to sixth place out of 16 teams at Binghamton's Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational, which wrapped up at the Links at Hiawatha Landing. The Mountain Hawks finished with a final score of 590, after shaving eight strokes off of their opening round 299.
 
Junior Owen Quinn was Lehigh's top finisher, tying for fifth at three under par 141 (69-72). Quinn's second round featured three consecutive birdies on holes seven, eight and nine.
 
The best round of the day for the Mountain Hawks on Monday came from senior Eamon Marone, who shot 70 to move into a tie for 37th place at 150 (80-70). Marone was even through 17 holes with two bogeys and two birdies, then made an eagle on the par 5 18th. Freshman Michael Tanaka also tied for 37th place with back-to-back rounds of 75. Tanaka had a team-high four birdies on Monday.
 
Junior Ryan Kelly made two birdies and also eagled the 18th hole on the way to a round of 74. He tied for 42nd place at 151 (77-74). Senior Lee Hammerschmidt tied for 73rd place at 158 (78-80).
 
Binghamton dominated its own tournament, capturing the team title at 562 (277-285). The Bearcats bested both Longwood and St. Bonaventure by 18 strokes. Binghamton's Justin Lane and Zachary Ottman tied for medalist honors at five under par 139, with Lane shooting 72-67 and Ottman going 67-72.
 
The Mountain Hawks will continue their fall season at the Connecticut Cup, hosted by UConn, Oct. 8-9 in Ellington, Conn.
