QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team defeated archrival Lafayette in both the Women's and Men's Varsity Eights on Lake Nockamixon Saturday as the Mountain Hawks took home the River Cup against their archrivals. A busy day also saw Mercyhurst and Jefferson compete in an exciting day of racing.

"We had a fantastic day," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "The team really stepped up and part of that is due to the fact that we were able to christen four new boats today thanks to the generosity of our parents and alumni. It was great to get out there in the new boats and perform at such a high level and bring home the trophies for Lehigh once again."

The Women's Varsity Eight finished first in a tight race, posting a time of 7:00.73 which was ahead of Mercyhurst (7:04.10), Jefferson (7:05.83) and Lafayette (7:07.55). On the men's side, Mercyhurst finished first (5:46.06), but Lehigh was right behind (5:51.45) and ahead of Lafayette by nearly six seconds (5:57.76).

"The Varsity Eights really stepped up today," said Conley. "A lot of what ends up happening with the River Cup comes from how they set the tone for the day.They really stepped up today."

On the women's side, Lehigh's Second Varsity Eight came in first by more than 33 seconds, posting a time of 7:35.13. The Varsity Four finished in 7:40.87 while the Second Varsity Four came in 8:00.87.

On the men's side, Lehigh's Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four posted times of 6:04.57 and 7:23.19, respectively.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday (Apr. 14) when they compete in the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
