Six-of-seven boats make finals in stellar effort at Kerr Cup

PHILADELPHIA – Six-of-seven boats advanced to a finals race, including all four women's boats making the grand finals, highlighting a strong effort for Lehigh rowing at Saturday's Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River. Among the strong performances was the Women's Varsity Eight, which finished second in its heat, which included finishing ahead of Drexel.
Â
"Collectively, we really stepped up our game today," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "The women really showed some speed which we're excited about as we near Patriot League Championships. On the men's side, we discovered we need to execute our first race of the day, which was an important lesson."
Â
The Women's Varsity Eight posted a time of 7:28.21, trailing only Fordham (7:24.82) and ahead of Drexel (7:29.23), Canisius (7:44.19), Fairfield (7:54.75) and West Point (8:25.90). The crew went on to post a time of 7:28.11 in a competitive grand final which saw the top five teams separated by less than 18 seconds.
Â
"The Women's Varsity Eight had a really great day," said Conley. "They beat Drexel in the heat and for us to do that against that kind of competition is a great step forward for the program. Last year at the Kerr Cup, the Women's Varsity Eight was sixth in the grand final and this year, we ended up fifth. We're definitely going in the right direction."
Â
The Women's Varsity Four also finished second in its heat, posting a time of 8:36.01, while the Women's Second Varsity Eight came in second as well (7:53.68). The Second Varsity Four reached the grand final after finishing third with a time of 9:47.03.
Â
On the men's side, the Second Varsity Eight posted a time of 6:54.13 in its heat to reach the petite final while the Varsity Eight finished in 6:33.05 to reach the repechage, where it came in first (6:31.57).
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action in less than 24 hours in a Sunday scrimmage at Bucknell. The women then return to action next Saturday (Apr. 21) at the Cherry Hill Invitational on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
Â
"I think at this point, we've narrowed down the lineups pretty close to what I think will race later on in the season," said Conley. "Now, it's about fine-tuning and possibly having that last switch or two within the lineups to find that extra bit of speed. I'm excited about where the program is and where it's going."
