BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a River Cup victory over rival Lafayette, the Lehigh rowing team looks to keep the momentum going on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks competes in the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Lehigh looks to continue progressing as it aims to be at its best for the Patriot League Championship and Dad Vail Regatta now less than one month away.
Â
Last Saturday, the Mountain Hawks defeated the Leopards in both Women's and Men's Varsity Eights to capture the River Cup once again. The women came in first with a time of 7:00.73, also defeating Mercyhurst (7:04.10), Jefferson (7:05.83) and Lafayette (7:07.55). The men were second behind Mercyhurst (5:46.06), but Lehigh's 5:51.45 time topped the Leopards' finish of 5:57.76.
Â
"We noticed at the River Cup that there was still speed in the Varsity Eights we were not harnessing correctly, so we made a few adjustments this week," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I think we made the right adjustments, but you never really know until you race other teams. We still need to work on focusing in, and the team has been really doing that."
Â
Last season, Lehigh enjoyed the program's best-ever performance at the Kerr Cup. The Mountain Hawks are hoping to do even better this year.
Â
"Last year, we made seven finals," said Conley. "This year, we would like to place better within the finals. Â We look at last year and know we are a different team, but last year set the bar really high and I believe this team wants to raise it again."
Â
This season has featured continued improvement for the Mountain Hawks. Two weeks ago, they sent five boats to finals at the Murphy Cup compared to sending two a season ago. The Murphy Cup was just one example of many that the Lehigh rowing program is headed in the right direction. Â
"Each week, we have seen the team get a little bit faster and last week was no different," said Conley. "Having momentum going into this weekend is incredibly important as we are coming off midterms. With championships in the middle of finals, this will be a great test to see if we can handle the pressure.
Â
Following Saturday's action, Lehigh heads to Bucknell on Sunday (Apr. 15) to compete against Bucknell in a scrimmage.
