BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Riding five straight wins, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team wraps up the regular season on Saturday when it travels to our nation's capital to face American University. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 14-5 win over Bucknell on Sunday as Lehigh scored 10 of the game's final 11 goals to improve to 11-5 on the season, 6-2 in Patriot League play. Lehigh have also locked up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament and can't move any higher or lower.
The Mountain Hawks have qualified for their fifth straight league tournament to tie a school record while locking up their third straight home game in the Patriot League Quarterfinals and second consecutive No. 3 seed. Lehigh's five-game winning streak is its longest since winning five straight last Mar. 11 to Mar. 25. The Mountain Hawks will vie for their sixth straight win on Saturday, which would be their longest since winning seven in a row in 2016 (Feb. 21 to Mar. 26).
A win on Saturday would give Lehigh a school-record seven Patriot League wins. The Mountain Hawks are currently tied for the record of six, set in each of the last two seasons. Lehigh has also reached double-figure total wins for the seventh time in the last 11 years.
Most recently, the Mountain Hawks fell behind 2-0 to Bucknell Sunday, and the Bison pulled even at 4-4 early in the second half, but Lehigh ended the game on a 10-1 run to cruise to the victory. Kayleen Kelly had a Senior Day to remember, posting a career high and school record 10 draw controls, breaking Carli Sukonik's previous mark of nine set Mar. 10, 2012 at Colgate. Kelly is up to 154 career draw controls, needing just five to tie and six to break Lehigh's career mark of 159 set by Leigh Ann Torcivia from 2009-12.
Sophomore Sondra Dickey led the offense with career highs in points (8) and assists (5), seven points coming in the second half as she had a hand in 70 percent of Lehigh's goals after halftime. Senior Haley Wentzel tied a career-high five goals for a second straight game. Freshman Samantha Sagi was stellar in goal once again, stopping 10-of-15 shots sent her way. Combined with her 14-save effort vs. Lafayette, Sagi was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks, earning her third weekly award of the season (also garnering Rookie of the Week in February).
American stands 3-13 on the season, 0-8 in Patriot League play. On Wednesday, the Eagles dropped a 13-12 home game vs. Lafayette, four days after a tight 12-10 loss at Holy Cross. American's wins this season have come against Howard (19-8), Old Dominion (17-12) and Gardner-Webb (12-10). Since that win, the Eagles have dropped nine straight. Erica Skowron leads the offense with 37 points (15 goals, team-high 22 assists). Emma Vinall owns a team-leading 34 goals while Lexi Perez has 26 points (22 goals, four assists). Sydney Fry leads the team in groundballs (32) and caused turnovers (13) while Vinall has recorded a team-leading 40 draw controls.
