WASHINGTON, D.C. – Trailing 9-8 midway through the second half, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team ended the game on a 4-0 run to down American, 13-9 on Saturday afternoon. The win marks the Mountain Hawks' fifth in a row to finish the regular season with a 12-5 record, including a 7-2 mark in Patriot League play. Those seven league victories mark a new Patriot League record.
Â
Lehigh will enter the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 3 seed and host sixth-seeded Holy Cross on Tuesday (May 1) at 6 p.m.
Â
Sophomore Sondra Dickey led the offense on Saturday with four goals and five points while sophomore Autumn Ryan posted her third-career hat trick with three goals and an assist. Freshman Julianne Puckette added two goals and an assist while senior Haley Wentzel scored twice.
Â
Senior Kayleen Kelly recorded six draw controls to reach 160 in her career, breaking the school record held by Leigh Ann Torcivia (159 from 2009-12). Kelly now owns Lehigh's game, season and career marks. Sophomore Alexandra Ladda tied a career-high four groundballs.
Â
Dickey opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest, but American responded with a 5-0 run. Lehigh broke a 20:55 drought at the 7:25 mark behind Dickey's second goal. Dickey added her third just 48 seconds later to pull the Mountain Hawks within 5-3.
Â
Lehigh began the second half on a 3-0 run with goals from Dickey, Puckette and junior Jane Henderson. In the end, the Mountain Hawks scored six-of-seven goals to turn a 5-1 deficit into a 7-6 lead.
Â
The Eagles came back with the next two and three of the next four goals to open a 9-8 advantage with 12:48 remaining, but that's when the Mountain Hawks took over. Junior Kellie Gough pulled Lehigh even, then Ryan scored at the 10:10 and 8:36 marks to give her side a 10-8 advantage. Puckette and Wentzel rounded out the scoring as Lehigh pulled away for the 13-9 victory.
Â
Final shots were 39-18 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks finished with a 20-12 edge in groundballs and draw controls were even at 12. Freshman Samantha Sagi made five saves for the Mountain Hawks while American's Fiona Geier recorded 12.
Â
"We're proud of our recent streak," said head coach Jill Redfern. "It's always a little harder to win on the road, especially on AstroTurf. It took us a while to get adjusted to the conditions today. We're sticking with our mindset of taking things one game at a time. We're looking forward to Tuesday night."
Tickets for Tuesday night's game are just $5 for the general public, $3 for college students, Lehigh faculty/staff, seniors (65+) and children (2-18). The first 50 Lehigh students at the gate Tuesday are admitted FREE. To purchase tickets in advance, please click here.
