BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following two straight impressive wins at Army West Point and home vs. Colgate, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team hits the road on Saturday for a matchup at Holy Cross. Opening draw is set for 2 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. Most recently, the Mountain Hawks defeated Colgate, 12-6, snapping the Raiders' three-game winning streak and handing them their largest defeat since last April.
Â
Following consecutive losses vs. nationally-ranked opponents Loyola and Navy, Lehigh responded with wins of 15-8 and 12-6, respectively. The victories came vs. two teams (Army and Colgate) squarely in the mix for a potential Patriot League Tournament berth. Entering Saturday, the Raiders had won five of their previous six games and stood 3-1 in the league, but the Mountain Hawks opened a 7-1 halftime lead. Colgate scored the first two of the second half, but Lehigh answered with three in a row and five of the next six to erase any doubt. The Mountain Hawks led by as much as eight (12-4) in a dominant all-around team effort.
Â
Freshman Julianne Puckette led the offense with career highs in goals (3) and points (4) while nine other Mountain Hawks scored one goal apiece. Another freshman, Samantha Sagi, was stellar on the defensive end, stopping 12-of-18 shots sent her way to earn Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, her second-career weekly award (also winning Rookie of the Week in February).
Â
The Mountain Hawks have just four regular season games remaining (counting this Saturday's game) as they stand 8-5 on the season and 3-2 in Patriot League play. Lehigh is tied for third in the league standings and with a win against the Crusaders, would give the Mountain Hawks an inside edge for a potential top-four seed and home game in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. Lehigh hopes to earn a home game (and reach double-figure overall wins) for a third straight season.
Â
Holy Cross is in the midst of an up-and-down season, standing 5-8 overall and 3-2 in league play. The Crusaders began the year with five straight losses, but have won five of their last eight games. In league play, Holy Cross has defeated Lafayette (16-14), Army West Point (11-10) and Bucknell (12-11) while falling to Colgate (9-8) and Navy (19-7). Keely Connors leads the team in goals (28) and points (29) while Baker Earl owns 23 points (20 goals, three assists) and Bryn Carroll has 17 (12 goals, five assists). Julia Mahoney leads the team with 34 groundballs, Connors owns a team-leading 53 draw controls and Audrey Mandaro leads the defense with 25 caused turnovers. Mahoney has started all 13 games in goal, recording a 12.37 goals against average and 0.422 save percentage.
Â
Saturday marks the second straight season Lehigh will play at Holy Cross. Last year, the Mountain Hawks picked up a dominant 10-3 win, Lehigh's third straight win against the Crusaders to take a 17-10 lead in the all-time series. Holy Cross' last win came in 2014 by a 9-6 final. Lehigh's last loss at Holy Cross was in 2013, 14-6.
Â
After Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home next Wednesday (Apr. 18) to host rival Lafayette at 7 p.m.
