BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse will play its second and third games in the span of six days when it wraps up nonleague action with road trips to Mount St. Mary's on Friday (3 p.m.) and Fairfield on Sunday (1 p.m.). Sunday's game was originally scheduled at home, but has been moved to Fairfield to allow time for scheduled field maintenance at Lehigh. Standing 3-3 on the season, the Mountain Hawks will look to build off their convincing 16-10 win over VCU on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Kellie Gough was the big story offensively vs. VCU, scoring six goals to double her previous career high of three. Gough scored the game's first two goals to put the Mountain Hawks in front early. Lehigh later went on a 10-2 run behind two separate 5-0 runs with two VCU goals sandwiched in between, turning a 2-1 lead into a 12-3 advantage midway through the second half. Lehigh led 15-6 with less than six minutes remaining before a late 4-1 Rans' surge pulled them within 16-10 at the final horn.
Along with Gough's six goals, sophomore Sondra Dickey scored three and dished an assist, good for her fifth hat trick in six games this season. Junior Courtney Henig recorded three points (two goals, one assist) to extend her streak of three or more points in every game in 2018. Equally impressive, the Mountain Hawks' defense allowed just three goals over the game's first 45:38 as Lehigh caused 17 of VCU's 24 turnovers on the afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Sagi made seven saves while allowing just six goals before she was relieved by classmate Claudia Hanover.
The win snapped a mini two-game losing skid for the Mountain Hawks, who have now won three-of-four games against unranked opponents this season. Henig is up to 30 points on the season, which includes 17 of Lehigh's 35 assists so far in 2018. Dickey owns a team-leading 18 goals and 29 draw controls while Gough is now second on the Mountain Hawks with 15 goals.
Mount St. Mary's owns a 3-2 record, defeating Manhattan (12-8), Army West Point (14-10) and Presbyterian (16-0) while falling to UMBC (9-8) and Longwood (11-10). Carly Miller leads the team with 18 points (11 goals, team-leading seven assists) while Taylor Carhart has 14 (team-leading 12 goals, two assists). Two others have tallied double-figure points: Beanie Colson (12 points: seven goals, five assists) and Emily Davis (10 points: eight goals, two assists). Colson has also recorded a team-leading 30 draw controls while Davis leads the way in groundballs (13) and caused turnovers (10). Jillian Petito has been strong in goal, posting a 7.60 goals against average and 52.5 save percentage.
Lehigh is 7-2 all-time against the Mountaineers, most recently playing in 2016, a 12-3 Lehigh victory. It marked the Mountain Hawks' sixth straight win over Mount St. Mary's. The teams first met in 2003, an 8-4 Lehigh win.
Like Mount St. Mary's, Fairfield has lost two games this season by just a single goal – both 13-12 finals at UConn and vs. Columbia. The Stags' four wins came vs. Holy Cross (14-5), at Hofstra (13-12, overtime), at Sacred Heart (18-7) and at New Hampshire (15-9). Fairfield is averaging 14.00 goals per game, led by four different players with a team-leading 11 apiece. Brenna Connolly leads the team with 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) while Kathleen Hulseman has 18 (11 goals, seven assists). Erin Mammele has 48 of the team's 83 draw controls on the season. Paulina DiFatta has started all six goals in goal, recording a 9.60 goals against average and 54.0 save percentage.
Fairfield leads the all-time series, 7-6, most recently beating the Mountain Hawks 5-4 in 2015. Lehigh has dropped five straight games against the Stags, last winning in 2010, a 14-13 win at Fairfield.
Following this weekend, the Mountain Hawks will open Patriot League play at Boston University on Saturday, Mar. 17 at 1 p.m.
