WATCH: Game-Winning Goal

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Trailing 7-3 less than three minutes into the second half, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team answered in a big way, scoring five of the final six goals of regulation and the game-winner in triple overtime to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 9-8 on Friday. Senior Kierstyn Voiro's second goal of the afternoon was the game-winner while she helped lead a Mountain Hawks' defense which held the Mountaineers to just one goal over the game's final 40:50 and none over the final 30:25.

"It was an exhausting game," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Give Mount St. Mary's a lot of credit. They played really well and gave themselves good opportunities. We had opportunities, but couldn't put it away there until the end."

Trailing by four, a three-goal surge pulled Lehigh within 7-6. After a Mountaineers' goal, Dickey scored the final two goals of regulation to force overtime, setting up Voiro's heroics.

Dickey finished with a team-high three goals, her sixth hat trick in seven games this season. Voiro finished with two goals, two groundballs, two draw controls and three caused turnovers. Senior Haley Wentzel tallied a goal and assist.

Defensively, the Mountain Hawks caused 13 of 16 Mount St. Mary's turnovers. Along with two from Voiro, Dickey had two (to go with three groundballs and three draw controls), senior Kellie Gough caused two turnovers, as did freshman goalkeeper Samantha Sagi.

"It was a tremendous defensive effort," said Redfern. "We saw some really great decisions by our defense. Kayleen Kelly came up with a critical draw there at the end. Lexy King had a really exciting caused turnover. Kierstyn Voiro was probably the difference in the game.

Wentzel opened the scoring less than three minutes in, but three straight Mount St. Mary's goals put the Mountain Hawks in an early deficit. Lehigh scored two of the next three goals, by junior Olivia Kelly and Voiro, but three consecutive Mountaineers' goals gave them their largest lead at 7-3 early in the second half.

Junior Jane Henderson broke the run, pulling Lehigh within 7-4 then Dickey and junior Kaitlyn Quinn followed with goals to pull the Mountain Hawks within 7-6. After Carly Miller gave Mount St. Mary's an 8-6 advantage, Dickey pulled Lehigh within 8-7 at the 13:50 mark and evened the score with 3:26 remaining.

Overtime saw plenty of chances by both sides, but both defenses stood tall until Voiro went to goal herself in the third overtime and beat Mount St. Mary's goalie Jillian Petito high to send Lehigh to its second straight win and fourth victory of the season.

Final shots were 32-22 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 23-14 edge in groundballs and 14-9 advantage in draw controls. Sagi made six strong saves for Lehigh while Petito tallied 14 for the Mountaineers.

"A game like this is great for this team because we're tying to focus on getting better with each experience," said Redfern. "That was certainly a lot of experience that just happened in that game."

Lehigh will return to action in less than 48 hours when it travels to Fairfield to face the Stags. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
