EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team scored double-figure goals for a sixth straight game to begin the season while holding VCU to just three goals over the game's first 45:38, on its way to a convincing 16-10 win on Tuesday afternoon at Lafayette's Fisher Stadium. Junior Kellie Gough led Lehigh's offense with a career-high six goals, the most goals by a Mountain Hawk since April of 2017 while the Mountain Hawks' defense caused 17 of the Rams' 24 turnovers on the afternoon.
Â
Gough's six goals were most since current graduate student Julianne D'Orazio scored six last Apr. 19 at Lafayette.
Â
"Kellie had a nice day," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Her teammates found her and she finished the ball. Her specialty is putting the ball away."
Â
Lehigh scored two goals over the game's first 16:40, but exploded in the middle stages of the contest. In a stretch of 32:02 from 13:20 remaining in the first half to 11:18 left in the second, the Mountain Hawks outscored VCU 12-4, turning a 2-1 lead into a 14-5 advantage.
Â
"We had good momentum in that period," said Redfern. "I thought we opened it up a little bit, found some good looks inside and held them down defensively for a pretty long time."
Â
Along with Gough's six goals, sophomore Sondra Dickey tallied a hat trick for the fifth time in six games this season. She finished with three goals, an assist, three groundballs, six draw controls and three caused turnovers. Junior Jane Henderson scored her first two goals of the season while senior Haley Wentzel had two scores as well. Junior Courtney Henig posted three or more points for the sixth consecutive game in 2018, finishing with a goal and two assists.
Â
Dickey, senior Alexis King and junior Mary Ellen Carron all tallied three caused turnovers to lead the defense. In total, 11 different Mountain Hawks had at least one caused turnover.
Â
Gough gave Lehigh a quick 2-0 lead with 23:40 still remaining in the first half. After VCU pulled within 2-1, the Mountain Hawks reeled off five consecutive goals, including two more from Gough, to take a 7-1 advantage. Lehigh led 7-2 at halftime.
Â
The Rams pulled within 7-3 just over a minute into the second half, but responded with another 5-0 run, beginning with Wentzel's second of the afternoon followed by an Olivia Kelly goal, two straight from Henderson and Dickey's second goal of the afternoon to give Lehigh a 12-3 advantage. The teams traded goals over the ensuing minutes before VCU scored four of the game's final five goals with Lehigh's bench emptied, but the Mountain Hawks cruised to the 16-10 win.
Â
The Mountain Hawks finished with a 37-26 edge in shots and 27-14 advantage in groundballs. Draw controls were even at 14. Freshman goalkeeper Samanta Sagi made seven saves, allowing just six goals over the game's first 53:42, before being relieved by freshman Claudia Hanover. VCU's Ria Peralta was strong, making 15 stops.
Â
"It's so important to get a win and get some new personnel out there to get comfortable with each other," said Redfern. "It was good to get our entire roster some minutes, so that was good for everyone's development and the team development, too."
Â
Lehigh will now head to Mount St. Mary's on Friday to face the Mountaineers at 3 p.m.
