PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh rowing team enjoyed a successful day at the Murphy Cup Saturday, with five of the seven crews who rowed advancing to either a petite or grand final. In the end, the Women's Second Varsity Four and Junior Varsity Eight each advanced to grand finals, with three other boats reaching petite finals.
Â
Saturday's effort was a big step forward for the program after sending just two crews to finals last year, both petite finals.
Â
"I thought we had a tremendous day from top to bottom," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "To have five boats this year make the finals goes to show the growth of the program and that what we're doing is working."
Â
The Women's Second Varsity Four began the day by placing third in its heat with a time of 8:15.04 to advance to the final. Later, the Women's Junior Varsity Eight put forth a tremendous effort in its heat, coming in second behind Temple and ahead of Fordham, Duquesne and Loyola with a time of 6:59.44. The Mountain Hawks went on to finish fifth in the grand final with a time of 7:50.43.
Â
"For the Women's Second Varsity Eight to be able to make it into the grand final, they were legitimately competing with some of the best crews in the regatta," said Conley. "That was awesome to see."
Â
Also advancing to their petite finals were the Men's Junior Varsity Eight, Women's Varsity Eight and Men's Varsity Eight. They each finished second in their respective petite finals with times of 6:56.18, 7:33.68 and 6:37.89.
Â
"As a group, we were very mature in terms of how we handled the racing conditions which progressively got worse as the day went on," said Conley. "It was great to see the Varsity Eights put out a good race and still be able to manage taking good strokes in really bad water."
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday when they host the annual River Cup on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown, Pa.
Â
"I like the progress that we've made," said Conley. "Moving forward, we know that there's still speed to be found, but we're at least hitting a good starting point."
