BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a strong performance at the Murphy Cup which saw the Lehigh rowing team post five finalists, the Mountain Hawks return to action this Saturday as they host archrival Lafayette, along with Mercyhurst and Jefferson, in the River Cup. Racing begins at 10:15 a.m. on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown.
Â
"The River Cup is always a fun race for us as it keeps us in the rivalry that Lehigh is known for," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It's important that the goals the team set out to achieve earlier this week are achieved on Saturday. We have big goals this year and this is a step towards them."
Â
This season has been marked by significant gains. The Mountain Hawks went from two Murphy Cup finalists last year to five this past weekend, which included two grand finalists.
"The Murphy Cup had very good competition and to have our team in the mix for finals and even medal contention in the Women's 2V (Second Varsity Eight) for most of their race shows our process is working," said Conley.
Â
The Mountain Hawks' Second Varsity Eight posted a time of 6:59.44 in its heat, only trailing Temple while beating Fordham, Duquesne and fellow Patriot League foe Loyola. Lehigh's time was also better than two other league opponents in another heat, Holy Cross and Colgate. The Mountain Hawks' 2V was rewarded by earning Patriot League Boat of the Week honors, Lehigh's first Boat of the Week award in program history.
Â
The weekly honors is just one of many signs of improvement within the program, which is the ultimate goal. If there is continued improvement, Lehigh rowing will put itself in the best position possible come its championship races in May.
"I believe our biggest strengths come from the faith in our process and the improved depth and commitment of the team," said Conley. "It keeps building on the foundation of the culture the team established a couple years ago. I'd love to see us continue to improve in those areas and get out of our heads when things get hard or change. Adaptability is incredibly important in our sport and even beyond Lehigh."
Â
On Saturday, Lehigh will be christening its new boats before the race and after, the program will be hosting its 30th Anniversary Dinner Celebration. In between, the Mountain Hawks are focused on beating Lafayette, something they have been accustomed to doing. Last year, Lehigh won eight-of-nine races, including wins by both the Women's and Men's Varsity Eights, to capture the River Cup.
Â
"Each boat has come up with its own process and result goals that they are working towards for the weekend," said Conley. "At the end of the day, the goal is simple… Beat Lafayette and bring home the River Cup again."
Â
After this weekend, the Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday (Apr. 14) at the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
