BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team looks to get back to its winning ways when it travels to Army West Point on Saturday. Following a four-game winning streak, the Mountain Hawks have lost two in a row, but both came against nationally-ranked opponents. Before those losses, Lehigh did open league play with a dominant 15-8 win at perennial Patriot League contender Boston University.
This Saturday marks Lehigh's seventh game away from home in eight games, with the only losses in that stretch coming to No. 10 Loyola and No. 13 Navy. The Mountain Hawks now stand 6-5 on the season, 1-2 in Patriot League play, but have already played last season's No. 1, 2 and 4 seeds (Lehigh was the No. 3 seed).
Most recently, Lehigh dropped an 18-7 final at Navy Wednesday. The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but the Midshipmen scored six straight and eventually opened a 9-3 lead. Lehigh responded with three goals in the span of 4:11 to pull right back into the game, but Navy picked up 10 of the game's final 11 draw controls, controlling possession down the stretch and turning it into a 9-1 run to end the game.
It was Lehigh who controlled the draw controls in the early going, winning 10 of the first 16. Among the draws was three each for senior Kayleen Kelly and sophomore Sondra Dickey as both reached 48 career turnovers to eclipse the previous single-season school record of 47 held by Carli Sukonik in 2012. Kelly broke the record on the game's first draw while a late first-half draw from Dickey led to a Courtney Henig transition goal, Lehigh's second score in the span of 16 seconds.
Dickey finished Wednesday with a team-high four goals, her eighth hat trick in 11 games this season. She now leads the team with 30 goals and 41 points this season. Henig scored twice and now has 19 goals and a team-leading 21 assists.
In just its third season of varsity lacrosse, the Black Knights have already posted their most wins in program history, currently standing 7-4. Army won five games in each of its first two seasons. Army is 1-2 in Patriot League play, coming off a tight 11-10 defeat at Holy Cross. Its league victory came over American, 17-8. Rachel Hornick leads the team with 38 points (19 goals, 19 assists) while Maddie Miller owns 31 (12 goals, 19 assists) to lead nine Black Knights with double-figure points. Lauren Bredenburg leads the team in groundballs (22) and caused turnovers (13) while Amy Johnston has a team-leading 55 draw controls. Maddie Burns has started all 11 games in goal, recording a 9.96 goals against average and 0.405 save percentage.
Lehigh is 2-0 all-time against Army, beating the Black Knights at home in 2016 (14-6) and earning a victory at West Point last year (15-8). Lehigh's defense caused 19 of Army's 27 turnovers on the day while Allison LaBeau scored five goals.
Following Saturday's action, Lehigh will return home on Saturday, Apr. 7 to host Colgate at 4 p.m.
