Total team effort leads Lehigh to 15-8 win at Army West Point

3/31/2018 7:21:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore Autumn Ryan scored two of the game's first three goals, on the way to a career-high four on the afternoon as the Lehigh women's lacrosse team snapped a mini two-game losing skid in convincing fashion, beating Army West Point 15-8 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Sondra Dickey posted a game and career-high five goals and seven points while junior Kaitlyn Quinn tallied two goals and two assists as the Mountain Hawks improve to 7-5 on the season, 2-2 in Patriot League play. Senior Kayleen Kelly led the defense with a career-high four caused turnovers while holding Army leading scorer Rachel Hornick without a point.

"Kayleen was a difference-maker for us today," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "She shut-out Hornick and was just relentless on our draw team. Credit our entire roster for positive contributions all over the field. This was a rewarding team win and a great bounce back after two tough losses."

Hornick entered the day with a team-leading 38 points through 11 games (19 goals, 19 assists), but Kelly stood tall, forcing four turnovers while adding a team-high five draw controls and career-high six groundballs. Senior Alexis King also added four groundballs and three caused turnovers.

Senior Haley Wentzel scored twice as Lehigh's fourth player with multiple goals. Junior Olivia Kelly recorded a goal and two assists and junior Courtney Henig dished three assists.

The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before the game was nine minutes old. Two straight goals from Army's Manuela Cortes cut Lehigh's lead in half, but the Black Knights wouldn't pull any closer than two the rest of the way. Goals from Dickey and Ryan gave the Mountain Hawks a 6-2 edge with 13:57 remaining in the first half. After Army pulled within 7-4, consecutive goals from Ryan and freshman Julianne Puckette gave the Mountain Hawks a 9-4 halftime lead.

Lehigh controlled most of the second half, eventually opening a 13-6 lead following a Quinn goal with 4:37 on the clock. Army scored two of the next three goals, but the Mountain Hawks remained firmly in control. Quinn's second goal of the afternoon in the final seconds wrapped up the 15-8 win.

Final shots were 35-23 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 22-16 edge in groundballs and 13-12 advantage in draw controls. Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Sagi made eight saves across a pair of Army goalies, who combined for 14.

Lehigh will return home next Saturday, Apr. 7 to host Colgate at 4 p.m.
