QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team opened its season on Saturday by winning five-of-six races against Patriot League foe Loyola on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown, Pa. Among the Mountain Hawks' standouts was the Women's Second Varsity Eight, which beat the Greyhounds by nearly 51 seconds. The Men's Varsity Eight won its race convincingly, finishing more than 23 seconds ahead of Loyola.
Â
"We had a great day of racing in some fairly challenging conditions," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We were able to step up in a number of events and walk away with a victory against a crew that's definitely getting faster in the Patriot League."
Â
Lehigh swept the women's boats, winning the Varsity Eight (7:36.8), Second Varsity Eight (7:30.8) and Varsity Four (8:33.6). Both of Lehigh's Varsity Four boats finished ahead of Loyola's; the Mountain Hawks' "B" boat finished in 8:41.7.
Â
On the men's side, Lehigh saw its Varsity Eight win (6:35.0), along with its Varsity Four (7:13.4).
Â
"The Men's Varsity Eight really looked clean and crisp basically their whole race," said Conley. "They were able to get some good, long strokes in which was awesome to see. The Women's Second Varsity Eight was relentless the entire way down the course, which was awesome as well.
Â
"The challenge is going to be finding out who's the fastest lineup amongst our team in both of those boats, so we can achieve the highest number of points possible at our championships in May. It was a good start to the season and we're looking forward to racing at Murphy Cup next week."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday, Mar. 31 at the Murphy Cup. Racing will take place on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
