BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team will continue its spring season on Saturday when it competes in the 36th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The race will feature morning heats followed by petite and grand finals, the same format as the spring championship races (Patriot League Championship and Dad Vail Regatta).
"This is a good race to give us an idea of where we stand at the start of the season," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We are hoping we have more speed this year than we had in past years at this point of the season."
It's still very early in the spring, but the Mountain Hawks are getting an early look at their Patriot League, and regional, competition.
"There will be a number of Patriot League schools at the Murphy Cup this year and many top-end Dad Vail schools," said Conley. "Seeing our championship competition at any point in the year is great as it helps us to focus on what we need to do."
Lehigh is coming off a strong effort against league foe Loyola in the spring opener last Saturday. The Mountain Hawks won five-of-six races on the day, including several by considerable margins. Lehigh did see success, but the team isn't satisfied.
"Our biggest takeaway is that we had set some goals that we didn't achieve within the racing for ourselves," said Conley. "This week, we have been very specific on our goals and training to achieve them. "
Returning so many experienced athletes from a successful 2016-17 campaign, the Mountain Hawks' goals and standards are higher at this point of the season than years past.
"I am hopeful this year, the team as a whole will be in a much stronger position than last year," said Conley. "On paper, we are faster than last year, but we need to execute what we know we are capable of doing, which comes down to maturity. We have nine seniors on the team and they are going to be looked at to help set the tone on how to race at the highest level."
Saturday is another opportunity to set that tone. With the spring season pretty confined (everything happening in less than a two-month span), every regatta is important towards reaching the program's goals.
"If we can have boats on both sides make it to finals this Saturday, that would be a step in the right direction," said Conley. "Our goals are very specific to the process. We want to get off the line and find an aggressive rhythm right away and be able to sustain that speed in the middle 1,000 meters. It will be a challenge this week and something that we'll be working on all season."
Following Saturday's racing, the Mountain Hawks return home on Saturday, Apr. 7 to host the River Cup.
