BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Wednesday's nor'easter dropped another foot of snow on the Lehigh Valley, leaving Lehigh's weekend softball plans in doubt. With favorable weather conditions over the last two days, the Mountain Hawks will attempt to open their home and Patriot League slate this weekend against Colgate.
Lehigh and Colgate will now attempt to play their series Sunday and Monday, with quality of field conditions determining times and number of games per day.
The defending Patriot League champions, Lehigh is looking to wipe the slate clean as it begins league play. The Mountain Hawks' inability to hold late leads has resulted in a 4-15 start. Lehigh went 2-8 in its spring break trip to Florida, picking up the 1,000th win in program history with a 3-1 triumph over Elon last Friday. The Mountain Hawks were tied or leading going into the seventh inning in five of their eight spring break losses.
Offensively, senior Nicole Yozzo led Lehigh over spring break and continues to lead the Mountain Hawks overall. Yozzo hit .355 (11-for-31) over 10 games during spring break with 11 stolen bases and leads Lehigh overall in batting average (.339), runs (12), hits (19) and stolen bases (19).
Lehigh's middle infield combo of senior Rachel Timberman and sophomore Mary-Hannah Smith is tied for the team lead in RBIs with 10 with the duo hitting .293 and .282 overall, respectively. Seven of Smith's 10 RBIs came over the 10 games in Florida.
Sophomore Parker Boyd earned both of Lehigh's wins over spring break, pitching to a 2.47 ERA over 34 innings, with 28 strikeouts. For the season, Boyd is 3-8 with a 4.24 ERA and leads Lehigh in innings pitched (62.2) and strikeouts (49). Junior Emily Sorem tops the Mountain Hawks with a 3.98 ERA and will look to replicate the success she enjoyed during last year's Patriot League regular season, where she went 7-0 with a 1.22 ERA during the league season.
Colgate has also struggled in the early season going 3-18 thus far, but two of the Raiders' three wins came in their last action at the Loyola Marymount Tournament. The Raiders posted wins over Monmouth and Fairfield in their 11-game California trip that saw Colgate go 2-9 in action in Riverside and Los Angeles.
Last year, Colgate went 3-15 in the Patriot League regular season and failed to qualify for the league tournament.
Colgate is hitting just .185 through 21 games and are averaging just under 2.5 runs per game. Virginia Irby leads the Raiders with a .273 average, while Holly Geranen has been the top run producer with foru home runs and 11 RBIs.
Four Raiders have thrown at least 12 innings in the pitcher's circle. Jessica Hay leads Colgate in innings pitched (50.1), ERA (3.89) and strikeouts (19) with Kyle Griswold serving as the No. 2.
Lehigh leads the all-time series versus Colgate 78-26. The Mountain Hawks won two out of three games last year in Hamilton, N.Y. to close out the regular season. Lehigh has won the last 11 games in the series played in Bethlehem.
With uncertain status of the weekend schedule and the current field conditions, the Lehigh-Colgate series will no longer be streamed on the Patriot League Network.
Following the Colgate series Lehigh is scheduled to play a single game at Penn on Tuesday, before hosting rival Lafayette for the annual rivalry series March 31-April 1.
