Strong game one performance helps Lehigh to split with Colgate in league opening doubleheader

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its home and Patriot League opener, Lehigh got a strong pitching performance from sophomore Parker Boyd and capitalized on five Colgate errors to defeat the Raiders 9-1 in six innings, Sunday at Leadership Park. Colgate bounced back in game two, scoring five unearned runs off of two Lehigh miscues to claim an 8-1 win and split the doubleheader.
With Sunday's split, the Mountain Hawks are now 5-16 on the season, while the Raiders are now 4-19. Both teams open Patriot League play at 1-1.
"If we can't catch the ball and throw the ball we're not going to be very good," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "We played well those six innings in game one and Parker pitched great. We had some timely hitting as well. We gave them a lot of runs in game two and until we can get more consistent, that's going to be the result."

Boyd delivered a strong start to pick up her fourth win of the season. She allowed one sixth-inning run on three hits with a walk and nine strikeouts as she improves to 4-8 on the year.
"She was hitting her spots and getting ahead in the count," Troyan said of Boyd. "When you're in pitcher's counts it's a simple game. She did a great job of controlling their at bats and in the second game Colgate did the same thing, controlling our at bats."
After Boyd worked around back-to-back one out hits in the top of the second, Lehigh raced to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. A two-out error put two runners on for junior Brie Gerhardt, who singled up the middle, scoring freshman Payton Alsobrooks. After senior Nicole Yozzo reached on an infield single to load the bases, junior Ashley Rabago cleared the bases with a triple to left center.
Lehigh added two more runs in the third on a two-run single by sophomore Lexi van Ooyen and a seventh run in the fourth on a ground out by sophomore Mary-Hannah Smith.
Colgate's Holly Geranen put the Raiders on the board with a sixth inning RBI double, but a two-run single by senior Carolyn Wright in the bottom of the inning gave the Mountain Hawks their first run-rule win of the season.
Yozzo led Lehigh at the plate going 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored, and added two more stolen bases to bring her season total to 21.
Colgate committed five errors with just two of Lehigh's nine runs in game one earned to two Raider pitchers.
A pair of Lehigh errors in the third inning of game two led to six Colgate runs. An error, a RBI triple by Virginia Irby and then a successful squeeze bunt from Nicole Rounsavill put Colgate up 2-0. A second Lehigh error prolonged the inning with two outs, and back-to-back two-run doubles by Meghan Romero and Jordan Miller left the visitors up 6-0 after two and a half innings.
Miller was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Colgate as her fifth-inning double extended Colgate's lead to 7-0, while the Raiders added an eighth run in the seventh before van Ooyen delivered a RBI ground out for Lehigh's lone run in the home seventh.
Bella Crow kept Lehigh hitless through the first four innings before sophomore Reva Alderman led off the fifth inning with a single. Smith added Lehigh's second hit, a leadoff single in the seventh, and came around to score on van Ooyen's ground out.
"We just have to have a little bit better approach at the plate," Troyan said. "She was quick pitching us a bit. We let some good pitches go by and swung at some bad pitches. We just need to be a little more disciplined at the plate."
Junior Emily Sorem started for Lehigh and allowed seven runs (two earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings before giving way to senior Lindsay Phillips, who allowed a run on three hits the rest of the way.
Lehigh and Colgate will wrap-up their series with a single game Monday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. from Leadership Park.
