RICHMOND, Va. – The Mountain Hawks put together a dominant performance both at the plate and on the mound in a 10-3 victory over Monmouth on Saturday in day two of Richmond's Spider Invitational. Lehigh improves to 7-10 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 4-10.
Ryan Malloy had a big day at the plate as he led the offense in RBI (6) and in hits (3) in a 3-for-5 performance. Thomas Schumacher contributed a trio of RBI with a three-run homer in the seventh for his first home run of the season. He finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.
James Bleming and Mike Maguire tied for the lead in runs as they each scored three on the day. Maguire went hitless (0-for-1), but managed to draw four walks, which is the most by a Lehigh player this season.
In addition to the offensive outpouring, Lehigh received a stellar effort on the mound by Levi Stoudt and Chris Butera. Stoudt started and went 6.0 innings with a career-high tying 11 strikeouts while surrendering just three hits and two earned runs. Butera picked up his first save of the season as he recorded a career-high tying five strikeouts with just one walk in the final 3.0 innings of the game.
Lehigh jumped on the board in the first inning with a RBI single by Malloy. Bleming set the table as he reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
The Mountain Hawks tacked on two more runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Malloy came through again as he poked a two-RBI single to right center. Chris Kersey led off the inning with a double and Maguire drew a walk as both scored on the Malloy single.
Monmouth broke up the shutout in the fourth as they put up two runs with the aid of two walks and two hits. Lehigh responded in the fifth as Malloy came up clutch once more with a three-RBI double to drive in Kersey, Maguire and Bleming.
After a Jeff Shanfeldt sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the seventh put Lehigh ahead 7-2, Schumacher followed up with a three-run blast to left center to bring everyone home and gave LU a commanding eight-run lead.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Butera retired seven of the final eight batters to preserve the Lehigh victory.
The Mountain Hawks will finish their stint at the Spider Invitational on Sunday as they face defending Ivy League champion Yale at 10 a.m.
