Bleming's Walk-Off Homer Lifts Lehigh to Victory Over Yale

3/18/2018 3:50:00 PM | Baseball

RICHMOND, Va. – The Mountain Hawks capped off their trip to Richmond with an exclamation point in a 3-1 walk-off victory over defending Ivy League champion Yale on Sunday in the final day of the Spider Invitational.

James Bleming was the hero for Lehigh (8-10) as his two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning clinched the dramatic victory over the Bulldogs (3-11). The senior shortstop finished the day 1-for-4 and is now tied for the team lead with two home runs on the season. Bleming came on strong at the end of the week as he finished 3-for-8 and helped lead Lehigh back-to-back wins.

Lehigh trailed for seven and a half innings after Yale produced a run in the top half of the first inning. Jeff Shanfeldt ended the scoring drought with a solo home run to center to lead off the eighth inning.

Shanfeldt's homer was just the second hit of the day for LU as Yale's Eric Brodkowitz had been dealing up to that point. The senior righty had a no-hitter going through the first 5.0 innings, which was broken up by Tony Gallo's lead-off single in the sixth. Brodkowitz was taken out prior to the ninth inning as he finished the day with five strikeouts, one walk, three hits and one run allowed through 8.0 innings of work.

Ethan Frohman earned the win, his first of the season, as he tossed 2.2 hitless, shutout innings in relief with three strikeouts. Jason Reynolds had another solid outing as he tossed the first 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts and no walks. The sophomore has not allowed a walk in his last two starts while he has compiled 14 strikeouts in his last 12.1 innings.

Lehigh's walk-off win on Sunday is the first since a 4-3 victory over Lafayette on April 23, 2016. The win also marked the second time this season the Mountain Hawks have notched a victory against a defending conference champion (Davidson – Atlantic 10).

After going 2-1 at the Spider Invitational to cap off the spring break trip, Lehigh returns north for a midweek trip to Penn on Wednesday. The Mountain Hawks will then face archrival Lafayette in a four-game set beginning Saturday to open up Patriot League play.
